Gerald Edwin Martilla was born Dec. 18, 1936, to Edwin and Edna (Jumisko) Martilla at rural Frederick, S.D. He attended school in Richland Township and graduated from Frederick High School with the class of 1954. He went on to take general classes at South Dakota State College for one year. While at college, he was a member of the R.O.T.C. Gerald was united in marriage to Henrietta "Hanky" Bain on Aug. 26, 1956, at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Frederick. Plans were being made to celebrate 50 wonderful years together as husband and wife in August. Gerald worked for South Dakota Wheat Growers Association for three years before moving to the Martilla farmstead near Frederick where he and "Hanky" farmed together until 2004 when they retired and moved into Frederick. Gerald was a member of Savo Lutheran Church where he was baptized, confirmed and served on the church council. He was currently a Director of First National Bank of Frederick and chairman for the Savo Cemetery Association. For many years, in his youth, he enjoyed being a member of the Sod Buster 4-H Club. Gerald served as Director of the Northern Electric Cooperative, Frederick Oil Coop and Richland Township Board. Spending time with family and friends, who brought Gerald much joy, allowed him to instill the values of integrity, honesty, and a hard work ethic. He enjoyed being in the outdoors on the farm or hunting. Forever grateful for having shared his life are his loving wife, Henrietta ("Hanky" Bain) Martilla, Frederick; two daughters, Cindy (Tom) Heckel, Aberdeen, Cathy (Denny) Rasmussen, Sioux Falls; seven grandchildren, Scott, Kristi, and Michelle Heckel, Aberdeen, Landon Rasmussen, Sioux Falls, Rob Heckel, Sioux Falls, Matthew (Tally) Rasmussen, Mankato, Minn., and Michael Rasmussen, military service in Iraq; three great-grandchildren, Teigen Heckel, Sioux Falls, Dylan and Mykayla Rasmussen, Mankato, Minn.; one sister, Margene Hill, Barberton, Ohio, along with her children, Brian, Leslie, Howard and Eugene Hill; and his extended family of brothers- and sisters-in-law, nieces, nephews, cousins and many friends.
