Gerald Kearney was born Nov. 21, 1941, in Atchison, the son of John and Mildred Klinefelter Kearney. He grew up in rural Atchison county and attended schools in Effingham. He graduated in 1959 from Atchison County Community High School. After high school, he immediately joined the Navy and was stationed in Hawaii. He remained in the service until August 1962. On Oct. 26, 1963, he and Colleen Jerome were married at Immaculate Conception Church in Valley Falls. She survives of the home. Mr. Kearney was in the construction trade and with his brothers began Kearney and Sons Construction in Valley Falls. He also raised cattle on his property near Valley Falls. Bub was of the Catholic faith and formerly held membership in St. Ann's Church in Effingham, St. Joseph Church and St. Benedict's Church in Atchison. He was a member of the Elks Lodge in Atchison and he enjoyed fishing, hunting, raising cattle and his granddaughter. In the past 30 or more years, Bub was involved in racing sprint cars. He and his son traveled throughout the region to various racing venues. He was the owner and took an active part in the maintenance of the cars his son raced. Surviving Mr. Kearney is his wife, son and his wife, daughter, all of Valley Falls; two brothers, both of Atchison; and a sister, of Nortonville.
