Description	:	Gerald F. Smith, 91, of Akron, died Sunday, September 20, 1998, at Akron City Convalescent Care Center following a lengthy illness. Services were held Wednesday, September 23, 1998 at Schroeder Funeral Home in Akron, with the Reverend Marion Sindt of Wesley United Methodist Church officiating. Burial was in Riverside Cemetery. (Phippin) Smith. He attended school in Akron, graduating from Akron High School in 1924. He attended the University of South Dakota in Vermillion, where he received his Bachelor of Science degree in education in 1929. He married Celia Mary Smith on July 22, 1929, in. Mt. Vernon, S.D. She died August 1980. He taught school in Iowa, then joined his father in publishing the Akron Register-Tribune newspaper. During World War II, he worked at the Naval Research Laboratory in Washington D.C. He then returned to Akron. He also would keep score at Akron school ballgames. He was a member of Wesley United Methodist Church, Freedom Lodge 434, Sioux City Consistory, Abu Bekr Shrine Temple; in Sioux City, and Akron Community Theater. He was a former member of Kappa Sigma fraternity. He was a licensed amateur: radio, operator and a member of local and regional ham radio operator groups. Survivors include a daughter, Barbara M. Reynolds of Shoreview, Minn.; two grandsons and their wives, Russell and Lisa Reynolds of Atlanta, Ga., and Richard and Julie Reynolds of St. Louis, Mo.; and six great-grandchildren. He was also preceded in death by a son-in-law, Charles "Chub" Reynolds; and a special friend Genevieve McVay.
