Read More	Wenatchee World - Feb. 10, 2013 Gertrude "Gert" Snyder September 10, 1928 ~ December 31, 2012 Gertrude "Gert" Snyder, 84, a longtime resident of Waterville, WA, died Monday, December 31, 2012. Gert and her twin sister, Liz, were born in Sherwood, OK on September 10, 1928. Their family moved to Carlton, WA when they were 12, and later settled in Chelan, WA. She was the Salutatorian of her class and received a full scholarship to WSU, but was unable to use it because she had to go to work to help support her family. Gert met her husband, Howard, while picking apples in high school. Howard "Sam" helped her top trees. Their first date was a basketball game, and they married in 1948. They were married for 61 years. Gert and Sam had five children, but a daughter, Barbara, who had cerebral palsy, died of pneumonia at age six, and a son, Dennis, died of a brain tumor at age 13. Their son, Harry, died in 2010 from cancer, at age 54. Gert loved her children very much. Although she worked, she made a point to attend their many sports events and school functions, and encouraged them in their Boy Scouts participation. Gert began to work in the Douglas County Assessor's office in 1966, as an office worker. In 1972, she became Chief Deputy, and Personal Property Deputy in 1981. In 1982, the current assessor retired, and Gert decided to run for the position. She was elected and served as Assessor from 1982 to 1990. Gert was a person who gave of herself to others, was very involved in her community, and was constantly busy. After formally retiring, she took a job baking bread for the school lunchroom. She had her (then four) grandchildren come and stay with her for two weeks every summer. Then, when her last grandchild, Benjamin, was born, she took care of him while his parents worked. When he became school age, she volunteered at the school, helping children read, helping with parties, evaluating senior projects, etc., and was named school Volunteer of the Year in 2007. She also remained active in several civic service groups, boards, and committees, including her church, Waterville School Board, Planning & Zoning Committee, NCW Fair, Lions Club, Chamber of Commerce, Senior Citizens' Center, Link Transit, and Waterville Clean Up Days. She was also co-chairman of the horticulture booth at the fair for 20 years. In 2002, a position on the Waterville Town Council opened, she ran and was elected. She served on the Town Council until her death. Gert was named "Citizen of the Year" by the Town Council in 2003. In addition to all of this, her cooking skills graced many community events with homemade soups, pies, pickles, and jams. She made roasters full of chili and clam chowder for the church for Christmas Eve, soups for the bazaar, and baked pies for the concert performers at the fair each year. She was famous for her homemade sauerkraut, and her husband even rigged a heavy duty shredder for her Kitchen Aid to shred all the cabbage that was needed. They had a huge garden, and she canned and froze produce for her family and others to enjoy. She has many, many awards and ribbons for her pies and produce entries in the fair. Her granddaughter once asked for her recipes, and her daughter-in-law made a "Gert's Secret Recipes" cookbook. It was intended for family, but she was asked by friends and strangers for her recipes, and we printed over 500 copies of the cookbook over the years. She is survived by her twin sister, Liz Gormley of Wenatchee; brother, Jim (Clancy) Talley of Chelan; two sons, Tom Snyder and his wife, Sandy of Camano Island, and Dale Snyder and his wife, Adele of Waterville; daughter-in-law, Paula Snyder Porter of University Place; five grandchildren, Jamie Snyder, Belinda (Tony) Hooper, Brandon Snyder, Elizabeth (Michael) Hood, and Ben Snyder; and two great-grandchildren, Jackson Hooper and Kaitlin Hood. She was welcomed into Heaven by those who preceded her in death: daughter, Barbara; son, Dennis; grandson, Alex; brother, George; husband, Howard; and son, Harry; among many others. What a reunion it must have been! A Memorial Service will be held 11:00 a.m. Saturday, February 16, 2013, at the Waterville Federated Church, 220 W. Ash Street in Waterville, WA.
