J. F. Still in charge, assisted by Rev. L. E. Ripley of Emerson Methodist Church. Music for the service was furnished by C. D. Greenwood, Mrs. Ivan Salmons, Ralph Good, and Laura Post, with Mrs. Gale Greenwood at the piano. The pall bearers were W. H. Cramer, W. W. Abel, R. W. Davis, R. E. Good, C. D. Greenwood, and I. J. Salmons. The body was laid to rest in the family lost in the Emerson Cemetery. Gilbert Cheney was born March 8, 1854 near Glenwood, Iowa. He reached the advanced age of 82 years, 8 months, and 27 days. He was united in marriage May 2, 1878 to Sarah Ellen Snodgrass of Emerson, Iowa and to them were born five children, one boy and four girls. Nora Irene passed away when she was 5 years of age. And it seemed that her passing was the beginning of a change religiously in Mr. Chaney’s life. Those living an who also mourn his departure are: I. N. Cheney, Emerson, Mrs. Mamie Weed of Elgin, Illinois, Mrs. Lelah Griffin of Red Oak, Mrs. Sarah E. Stroud of Des Moines and seven grandchildren and many other relatives and many friends. Mrs. Cheney preceded her husband in death in 1920, after they had traveled life’s pathway together for more than 42 years. On July 7, 1921, he was united in marriage to Mrs. Mary Ann Bellatti of Glenwood, who also preceded him in death July 25, 1935. Mr. Cheney received his schooling in the Glenwood school and when a boy of 10 years of age, he went with his parents to Salt Lake City, Utah, and with others made the trip by ox-team there being some 60 in the caravan who when they arrived pitched their camp on the spot where the court house now stands. This was in 1861. In 1862 they came back to Iowa and settled on a farm east of Pacific Junction where they lived until about 1870. Immediately after their marriage, Mr. and Mrs. Cheney began housekeeping on a farm two miles south and east of Emerson where he broke up the virgin soil of this fertilizer Mills County land. Some 20 years later they moved to a farm just south of this city, but in 1903 he built a splendid house in Emerson and moved into the city and this was his home until the property was purchased by Mr. and Mrs. H. E. Greenwood. After the death of his wife in July 1935, Mr. Cheney made his home with Mr. and Mrs. Weed of Elgin, Illinois, where he stayed for a short time, after which he made his home with Mr. and Mrs. Stroud of Des Moines, but the last few weeks he spent time with Mr. and Mrs. I. N.Cheney in Emerson. He was a member of the Masonic Lodge Humanity Not 278 of this city and was revered by all members of this fraternity. On December 18, 1888, Mr. Cheney experienced that change of heart that all other Christians experience and united with the First Baptist Church of this city. IN 1913 he was elected to the high office of deacon, which office he held at the time of his death. In his passing church suffers a great loss, for Mr. Cheney was one of the faithful members, always giving freely and cheerfully of his time, talent, and means. He has fought a good fight.
