His remains were brought to Emerson for burial on Wednesday of last week, the funeral being held at the Baptist Church. Mr. Cheney will be remembered by the older residents of Glenwood where he resided for 19 years. He came to what was then Coonville in 1852, buying from Uncle Sam what later came to be known as the Moon farm just north of Glenwood. He was a man of great energy and force of character. He has the true spirit of a pioneer. Eleven years ago his restless spirit carried him to Nebraska, where he made a new home. Most men at his age are content to allow their children to do the pioneering. He resided near Emerson 22 years. That his life was a worthy one is exemplified in the splendid character of his descendants. Four children reside near Emerson. Milton Cheney was born January 8, 1825 in Cataraugaus County, New York. He lived there until 11 years of age, then moved with his parents to Courtland, Ohio, one year later to Freeport, Illinois. He lived there until 1852, then moved to Mills County, Iowa. He settled near Coonsville, now Glenwood. In 1871 he moved to his farm near Emerson. In 1893 he moved to Ulysses, Nebraska, where he remained till his death, October 23, 1904. He was married to Lucinda Osborne March 23, 1845, at Freeport, Illinois. She died in Emerson April 3, 1880. To this union was born four boys and three girls, Susan M., William Nelson, Horace B., Elihu, Gilbert, Emma, and Ella V., all of whom survive him but Susan and Emma. He was again married to Marilla Martindale of Grantsville, Utah, who still survives him. To this union was born two children, Lizzie and Wilson D., who also survive him.
