Read More	Elihu Cheney Emerson, February 12, Elihu Cheney, a resident of Emerson and Mills County, passed away at his home just south of town, Saturday, February 9. Death was due to paralysis. He had suffered three strokes previous to this, but had always managed to rally again and had been feeling pretty well for him this winter and unusually active for one of his age and condition. Funeral services were held Monday afternoon at 2 o'clock in the Baptist Church he had loved and attended for so many years of his life. The church was filled to overflowing with old friends from far and near, come to pay their respects to this man whom all honored. Masses of beautiful floweres testified to the love of friends and relatives. The seat in the church that he had occupied for so many years and which was seldom vacant when he was able to attend was draped with white flowers. The service was in charge of the pastor Rev. J. G. Harpett, who took for his text, "Blessed are the dead who die in the Lord." Mr. and Mrs. I.N. Cheney and Mr. and Mrs. Robert Honeyman, with Mrs. H. E. Greenwood at the piano, sang. Burial was made in the Emerson Cemetery. The pall beareres were C. E. Lakin, C. D. Greenwood, Ivan Salmons, C. O. Smith, Mark Shannon, and A. Thomas. Thus passed one of Emerson's most prominent citizens and one of Mills County's most esteemed pioneers. Elihu Cheney, fourth child of Milton and Lucinda Cheney, was born near Kent, Illinis, March 20, 1852 and passed away at his home near Emerson, February 9, 1929 at the age of 76 years, 10 months, and 19 days. When a infant, he came with his parents to Mills County, Iowa and located near Glenwood. When about eight years of age, he went with his parents to Salt Lake City, Utah, where they spent one winter. This trip, as well as the one from Illinois to Iowa, was made in true pioneer style, with covered wagons and ox teams. The trip each way took about three months. Returning to Iowa, they located in Mills County, north of Glenwood, where he grew to manhood. He then came to the farm north of Emerson, and lived there until September 17, 1874, when he was married to Eurana Mercy Gidding, who passed away May 8, 1926. The following spring, they moved to the old home south of Emerson where they lived continously until their family was reared. Then they moved to the present home to be nearer to town. To this union four children were born, Charles Silas died in infancy. Those remaining to mourn the loss of a devoted father are Mrs. Jessie Eaton of Torrington, Wyoming, Mrs. Grace Hauch, and Mrs. Vesta Durbin of this vicinity. There are three grandchildren, Gordon and George Hascall Jr., and Ivan Derbin. Therre are two brothes, Horace B., and Bilbert Cheney and one sister, Ella Honeyman who also survive him. Mr. Cheney united with the Baptist Church February 1884 and was a faithful member until the end. He gave willingly his time, service and means. He served as decon in the church and as a Sunday School Teacher for many years. He was for many years a member of the Emerson School Boarn and was always greatly interested in education. Being a pioneer he was educated mostly in the school of experience, but he was a great reader and bible student. His mind was very alert for a man of his years and he was often referred to for historical data of early days. He was a good story teller and looked on the bright side of life. By hard labor, economy, and careful management he was able to accumulate a compentency. While he lived he gave liberally to every worthy subject.
