In 1945-46, when she was 97 years old, she wrote a very long letter to Harold's mother, Lassie. Aunt Fanny apparently tried to put in the letter just about everything she could remember about Clay Co people. This was a personal possession of the McLerran family, but they shared the info with other Clay Co neighbors and family. Aunt Fanny's letter was destroyed in a fire some years ago, but various family members had copies of parts of the letter and a partially successful attempt at reconstruction was carried out. This material has never been distributed publicly, probably because of the personal nature of the letter. However, Harold has freely passed on relevant material to serious Clay Co researchers. As census and other records have become available, much of Aunt Fanny's work has been confirmed and only a few minor errors found. Of course, a lot of her statements can not be confirmed due to a paucity of records. As far as I know, the only information presently available regarding Gilly Moore comes from Aunt Fanny. This information has been given to some present day researchers by Harold and then some of these people have passed it on to others as absolute truth. Both Harold and I believe that what Aunt Fanny said about Gilly is true, but it should not be passed on carelessly without qualification. Here is a direct quote from Aunt Fanny: "Garret Moore, the father and Grandfather of the Moore family, I think died in the Spring of 1853 and was buried in the Sam Pennington grave yard between the Moore place and Bowls. His sister Gilly married Jimmie Smith, the father and grandfather of all the Smiths around. Garrett, Billie, Joe, Jessie his sons. Sintha married Wash Clancy and they had three sons and one daughter Martha." As far as I know, the above quote is the only source of the relation between Gilly and Garrett. A lot of other Moores in Jackson county are descended from Denton Moore, son of Samuel Alexander Moore and Nancy Denton. Samuel lived in White County and Denton was apparently the only one of his children to move on up to northern Jackson Co. Some think that Samuel and Garrett could be brothers. This is more from Larry Smith per the following book: FROM THE PINE HILL BOOK, PAGES 110-111 The Smith Family of the Pine Hill/Denton's Cross Roads Area of Clay County Tennessee The first Smith in this area of Clay County is believed to be JAMES SMITH who was born in Virginia about 1777. His parentage is still being researched. He married GILLIE MOORE, as sister to GARRETT MOORE. I have found land grants for more than 2,500 acres made to JAMES SMITH by the state of Tennessee, starting about 1804. There are also several hundred acres granted to JAMES SMITH in the South of Walkers line land grants. All are located on the Brimstone Creek drainage basin. James and Gillie had a large family. At this time, only five children have been confirmed: Jessie, William A, Garrett, Nancy and Cynthia. Unconfirmed children are Littleberry, Calvin, and Temperance, plus others. It is believed by some researchers that they had 12-14 children. The 1820, 1830, 1840 census reports justify this belief. Many homes in and around this area were built by the descendents of James and Gillie. The home of Jess Brown is one of them. It was built by Dave Smith before he moved to the Oklahoma Panhandle. Other descendents who have built homes in this area include Mamie Smith and the late Elton Smith and Coretta Osgathorp Denton and husband Tommy Denton. The farm owned by Wayne and Anna Head and Susan and Jackie Bray is believed to be the last part of the original land grants to be owned by a descendant of James and Gillie(this being Susan). Most of the original Smiths are buried in the Smith Cemetery located on what is now known as the Hestand Farm, the home of Herman and Creed Hestand. Known to be buried here are Jesse Smith(author's GGGgrandfather) and his wife Elizabeth Miller Smith, his daughter Purlina Jane Smith Dodson and her husband John T Dodson, Jesse's son Jesse Jefferson Smith and his wife Lucettie Catherine Spears Smith. Also believed to be buried here are the original JAMES SMITH and wife GILLIE MOORE SMITH, Garrett Smith who was the son of James, and his first wife. It is believed by myself and a few others that the original Smith home was built on the same hill as the Smith Cemetery, about 100 yards north of said cemetery, as there is an adequate water supply at the base of this hill. Also, I was told by Herman Hestand that when he was a young man he found much evidence to suggest this to be so. One of the artifacts found at this location is part of an old flintlock rifle. There is more but not directly relating to James SMITH and Gilly MOORE. At the end is a list of the researchers.
