Mrs. Keene, a former Lawrence resident, died Sunday in Lenexa, where she was a resident of the Lakeview Village nursing home. She was born Aug. 18, 1894, in Fairview. She was a Lawrence resident from 1924 to 1977, and for several years she taught home economics at Lawrence Junior High School. She attended Ottawa University and Kansas State University, where she was a member of the Delta Zeta sorority. She was a member of the Daughters of the American Revolution, and she had been a member of the Lawrence Country Club and the First Baptist Church in Lawrence. She married Harry W. "Dick" Keene in 1917. He died in 1965. Mr. Keene had been co-owner of the Haynes-Keene Shoe Store from 1915 to 1958. When the store in the 800 block of Massachusetts was sold, it was the oldest store of its type in Lawrence. Mr. Keene also had served as the president of the Lawrence Chamber of Commerce and as a commander in the American Legion. Survivors include two sons, W. Richard Keene, Mission Hills, and Kenneth Keene, Odessa, Tex.; a brother, Sam Okeson, Sabetha; eight grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.
