CARPENTER received word this morning of the death of her niece Grace BURKHART, which occurred yesterday in Pembine, Wis. Death resulted from appendicitis. Grace was the eight year old daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Wm. BURKHART. Mrs. BURKHART will be remembered here as Miss Belle SANDS. Funeral services will be held Saturday from the home of Dr. and Mrs. CARPENTER. ------- The following obituary tribute was found in a collection of scrapbook items collected by Jennie Prince that were bound together and can be found at the Fairfield Public Library. Unfortunately, the name of the publication and date of publication were not given; attempts to identify the name and date have not been fruitful. The account is clearly contemporary to the death and was likely published within a week or two. The collection consists of photocopied clippings of the original obituary tributes and is transcribed verbatim as best as possible: Source: OLD SCRAPBOOKS OF JEFFERSON COUNTY IOWA 1898-1930 CLIPPED BY JENNIE PRINCE "OBITUARY Death is at all times an unwelcome guest and doubly so when there are only a few hours warning as was the case of little Grace BURKHART, youngest daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Wm. BURKHART of Pembine, Wis. Little Grace was only sick three days it was only a few hours when the loved ones around her realized that the Angel of Death was hovering over her and almost without warning the little darling closed her eyes on earthly scenes as peaceful and calmly as though asleep. Little Grace was born in Fairfield nine years ago. The family moved to Wisconsin where they have since made their home. Grace with her sister Ruth, was always inseparable in the same grades in school. They always learned like twins. But God knows best and he saw fit that she was too good, sweet and pure to endure the tials and sorrows of this world, and he therefore sent an angel to bring his darling home and no doubt now she is singing praises to our Heavenly Father whom she so loved while on earth. It is not how long we live but how well we live and this is truly exemplified in this little darling's death The bereaved parents and little sister Ruth have the warmest sympathy of their many friends in the county as they sit in the shadow that has robbed them of their little darling. She was laid to rest Saturday afternoon amid a bed of flowers in the Evergreen cemetery. Rev. Tennant spoke comforting words to the bereaved ones. A large concourse of friends was present to pay their last respects to the little one. - Contributed"
