Heye was confirmed in 1869 at the age of 21. In 1883, at the age of 35, Heye married Antje H. Sweers. Logumer Vorwerk, Ostfriesland, Germany was a very small town close to the city of Emden. According to the Lutheran church records, he was baptized on 01 October 1848. Heye was confirmed in 1869 at the age of 21. In 1883, at the age of 35, Heye married Antje H. Sweers. Logumer Vorwerk, Ostfriesland, Germany was a very small town close to the city of Emden. Larrelt, where his wife, Antje was born and where they lived before coming to the US was 1.4 miles from Logumer Vorwerk. In 1890 the family left from the Port of Bremen, Germany for the United States, landing in Baltimore, Maryland aboard the S. S. America. They are listed as passengers #776-779. Heye (41, a farmer) & Antje (30) Folkers and their two sons Harm (3) & Jacob (9 months) had two pieces of luggage and their accomodations were in the "spar-deck A". The ship's captain was A. Kohlmann. The trip over was made in thirteen days. They arrived in Baltimore in the 23rd day of April 1890. Their intended destination was listed as Illinois according to the ship's manifest. Listed next to them as passengers #780-783 is Antje's brother, Jacob Schwers (33, farmer), and his wife, Cornelia (28), and their two children, Bertha (5) and Harm (2). The Schwers destination was listed as Maryland. There were 1152 passengers aboard. Source: Baltimore Passenger Lists, 1820-1948, S. S. America, April 1890 page 13. Although they are found in the Baltimore Passenger Lists, the passenger manifest says their Port of Arrival was New York, New York. Their names are also in found in the Castle Garden Emigrant Landing Depot Records in New York for 23 April 1890 as arriving aboard the steamship 'America' from Bremen, Germany. Heye was the last of six Folkerts siblings to come to America - Elizabeth (1882), Harm (1884), Geerd & Jon (1885), Wopke (1886) and Heye (1890). One brother, Willem, stayed in Germany. If they did go to Illinois, they did not stay there very long as by Feb 1891 they were living in Shiloh Township, Grundy County, Iowa when their daughter, Kate, was born. They settled near Wellsburg, Iowa, just nine miles from Steamboat Rock where his siblings were. Heye Folkerts (45 Germany) appears in the 1895 State Census for Shiloh Township, Grundy County, Iowa along with wife, Antje (35 Germany) children, Harm (8 Germany), Jacob (6 Germany), Gelke (4 Iowa) and Johanna (2 Iowa). Heije Folkerts (51, Sep 1848 Germany) was working on a farm in the 1900 United States Federal Census (28 June 1900) for Shiloh Township, Grundy County, Iowa (sheet 9A, dwelling 148). He and Antje Folkerts (40, Feb 1860 Germany) had been married for 17 years and had 11 children, 6 living: Harm Folkerts (13, Sep 1886 Germany), Jacob Folkerts (11, Nov 1888 Germany), Gelke Folkerts (9, Feb 1891 Iowa), Johanna Folkerts (7, Sep 1892 Iowa), Wobkea Folkerts (4 Oct 1895 Iowa) and Heije Folkerts (2, Nov 1897 Iowa). They had immigrated to the US in 1890. Heije was a naturalized citizen having lived in the United States 10 years. Heige and Antje endured many heartbreaks in raising their children. Heartbreaks that sadly, many immigrants endured, losing children to disease and less than ideal living conditions. Whooping cough, scarlet fever, influenza, stillbirth and other diseases caused many children's deaths. Heye & Antje lost eight of their fourteen children. Three of their children are unknown, possibly stillborn. Twins, George and John died of "children's disease". John lived only one month and 17 days dying on 19 October 1899. George died four days later on 23 October 1899. A second son named George, as his brother before him, did not live very long, dying of whooping cough at the age of 7 months on 01 July 1902. Daughter, Wopea, age 10, died on 17 December 1905 from scarlet fever. Her younger brother, Heije, 7, died four days later of the same disease. Due to quarantine their funeral and burial was not held until 11 February 1906. Heye & Antje were not alone, Heye's sister, Wopke lost two children, brother, Harm, one child, and George lost two. Antje's brother, Jacob Sweers and his wife, lost seven of their twelve children. Sister, Grietje and her husband, Alerk Veer lost two children. In 1901, Heye and Antje moved to Hancock County and lived on a farm in Erin Township, south of Britt. Undoubtedly the fact that Antje's two siblings were living there had something to do with their reason to settle there. By the 1910 United States Federal Census (15 April 1910) the family had moved to Amsterdam Township, Hancock County, Iowa. Heye (62 Germany) and Annie (56 Germany) Folkerts had been married 27 years and had 14 children, 6 living, 5 at home, Jake (21 Germany), Kate (19 Iowa), Anna (9 Iowa) and Grace (5 Iowa). John Brower (26 Holland), a hired man, (daughter, Johanna's future brother-in-law) was helping them with the farm work. Heye and Antje immigrated to the US in 1890 and were naturalized citizens . Heije Folkerts (66 Germany) was a retired farmer in the 1915 State Census for Amsterdam Township, Hancock County, Iowa. He earned $800 in 1914. Heije had 8 years of Common School. His place was valued at $1500. They were members of the Christian Reformed Church. He had lived in the US 24 years and in Iowa all 24 of those years. He was a naturalized US citizen. The farm animals he had on the farm as on 1 January 1915 were: 10 calves valued at $80; 5 steers valued at $75; 1 bull valued at $40; 4 heifers valued at $60; 14 cows kept for milk valued at $420; 1 colt valued at $30; 8 horses valued at $600; 13 swine valued at $100 and fowls, all kinds 400, valued at $120. Heye M. Folkerts (71 Preußen) and Antje Folkerts (59 Preußen) are enumerated in the 1920 United States Federal Census for Amsterdam Township, Hancock County, Iowa. Two daughters, Anna Folkerts (19 Iowa) and Grace Folkerts (15 Iowa) were still at home. Heye and Antje immigrated to the US in 1890 and had gotten their naturalization papers in 1894. Death was caused by a complication of diseases due to old age. In 1883 while still in Germany, Mr. Folkerts was united in marriage to Antje Sweers. Fourteen children were born to this union of whom eight have preceded the father in death. In 1890 they moved to America and lived near Wellsburg until 1901 when they moved to this vicinity. For the past eight years they have resided in Kanawha. Mr. Folkerts leaves to mourn their loss is aged wife and six children, Herman, Jake, Mrs. Jake Van Dusseldorf, Mrs. Henry A. Brouwer, Anna and Grace, the latter two living at home. There are also four brothers, two living at Steamboat Rock, one in Buffalo Center, and one in Germany. One sister resides at Steamboat Rock. Services were held today, Wednesday, conducted by Rev. G. L. Hoefher of the German Reform church. Interment was made in the cemetery at Britt. Mr. Folkerts was a good husband and father and was a kind neighbor and leaves a wide circle of pioneer friends who feel deeply their loss.
