Description	:	He was born in Tofta, Flisby, Jonkoping, Sweden July 20, 1841. He was a twin of Karl Johan and there were eight children in the family. His parents were Anders Jonsson (born 1793 and died 1868 in Bredestad) and Stina Pettersdotter (born 1801 and died 1880 in Bredestad). His last name in Sweden was Anderson, but when Gustaf came to the USA in 1865, he changed his name to Engstrom. I was told he did this because they were so many Andersons. He was a twin of Karl Johan and there were eight children in the family. His last name in Sweden was Anderson, but when Gustaf came to the USA in 1865, he changed his name to Engstrom. I was told he did this because they were so many Andersons. He traveled mainly by wagon from the east coast to Henry County IL where he settled. Along the way, he did some work in coal mines and was also a plasterer. He met and married Johanna Kristina Beckman in Illinois in 1867. In Illinois, he made his living doing farm work and plastering. He moved his family of five girls and one boy to Iowa in 1876, when his son, Oscar was age 5. Evidently, they came to the Essex area to help Kristina's sister whose husband had left her with four sons and she was not well. Gustaf and family moved onto the farm near Essex and Clarinda which you know as the Engstrom place. It was approximately 140 acres of mediocre farm land, with a home on it, all of which he purchased. Gustaf and Kristina retired to the little town of Essex when their children were grown and their son, Oscar, moved into the home place with his wife. Gustaf was a short somewhat heavy, quiet man. He was gentle, but not prominent or well know in the community. When their Lutheran minister "went off his rocker" as the saying went, Gustaf too care of him. Gust Engstrom born July 1841 in Sweden.
