McKenzie, 24, veteran of World war II was crushed and killed beneath an overturned pickup truck he was driving on highway 91 two miles south of Dell shortly after midnight Monday. The following provided by Find a Grave contributor "Cara": The Dillon Daily Tribune (MT), 2 Dec 1947 Dell Young Man is Victim of Highway Wreck Tragedy again struck in the home of Mr. and Mrs. James MeKenzie of Dell when their son, Halden E. McKenzie, 24, veteran of World war II was crushed and killed beneath an overturned pickup truck he was driving on highway 91 two miles south of Dell shortly after midnight Monday. Tracks of the vehicle indicated it had gone into a skid on icy pavement, got into the barrow pit, turned over several times, crashed through the railway right-of-way fence, and finally came to a stop on its side on the incline of the railroad bed. The body of the deceased Dell ranch man was found pinned beneath the wreck. Earlier in the evening McKenzie had been driving toward Lima when his vehicle stalled. He pushed it off the road, drained the radiator and caught a ride back to the ranch where he got his father's pickup truck and was hurrying back to the other truck when the accident occurred only a mile from the first truck. A southbound bus driver spotted the wreck about 3 o'clock this morning and on investigation found McKenzie dead beneath it. The victim was born Jan. 27, 1928, in Fort Benton. He served for three years in the U.S. Army, a portion of which was in England. His untimely death follows that of a sister who was also killed in an auto accident some years ago, and two other children of Mr. and Mrs. McKenzie, who met death by scalding. The entire community joins in extending sympathy to the parents. The deceased leaves his wife, the former Lavera Peterson, a four-month-old son, Jay Raymond, his parents, three brothers-in-law and sisters, Mr. and Mrs. Don Bramlette, Mr. and Mrs. Kenneth Iverson, both of Lima, and Mr. and Mrs. Lee Gilbert of Washington; and two brothers, Carl of Ontario, Wash., and James McKenzie of Fort Benton. Burial will be in Fort Benton. Services to be held here.
