JOHN RITCHIE An old and respected resident of Amaranth township passed away on Wednesday, Feb. 20th, in the person of Hannah Knowles, widow of the late John Ritchie. Deceased, who had been making her home with her son, Samuel, had been ailing only a short time but the family knew that the end was near on account of her advanced age, 98 years, 11 months and 8 days. She was a good mother, a kind neighbor and all who knew her respected her. Deceased was born in England, living in Quebec after coming to Canada until about forty-four years ago when the family moved to Amaranth. She leaves to mourn their loss three sons and two daughters: Robert of Shelburne, Jos. and Samuel of Amaranth, Mrs. John Crombie of Shelburne and Mrs. Wm. Irwin of Toronto; also 26 grandchildren and 16 great grandchildren. The funeral service was conducted by the Rev. A. F. Webster, pastor of the Presbyterian church. The remains were conveyed to Laurel cemetery and laid beside those of her husband, the late John Ritchie, who predeceased her forty-two years ago. The pallbearers were her three sons and three grandsons, John Ritchie, Samuel Crombie and Johnnie Ritchie. *Note regarding her maiden name. Her 1924 death certificate lists her parents as R. Copeland and Hannah Copeland. It is unclear where the name Knowles came from.
