Read More	Obituary Harbers Vander Stoep cashier of the First National Bank here, passed away at St. Joseph's hospital in Sioux City; about 7 o'clock Monday evening, following an operation for appendicitis. He was first taken ill a week ago Sunday but his condition was not regarded as alarming for a day or two but on Wednesday afternoon of last week he was removed to the hospital and submitted to an operation at once. His appendix had apparently been ruptured for a day or two prior to the operation and his system had been so permeated with poison that his condition at once became extremely critical. There were also stomach and intestinal complications which added to the gravity of the case. He appeared to hold his own, however, for a few days but early Monday his resistance began to ebb steadily and that afternoon he lapsed into unconsciousness from which he did not rally. Funeral services will be held at the Associated church at 1:30 Friday afternoon, with Rev. T. H. Harding in charge. The funeral party will then go to his old home at Sioux Center where services will be held at 3 o'clock in the Christian Reformed church, of which he was a member from his youth. Interment will be made in the cemetery at Sioux Center. Harbers Vander Stoep spent all of his life in Sioux county. He was the fifth in a family of nine children born to Andrew and Alaida Wesselink Vander Stoep. He was born in Sioux Center July 1, 1900, so was not yet 35 years of age. He grew to young manhood there and was educated in the Sioux Center schools. After being graduated from high school he entered the employ of the First National Bank at Sioux Center where he remained for several years and became well grounded in the intricacies of the banking business. He came to Hawarden in September, 1927, as assistant cashier of the First National Bank here and continued in this capacity until the newly organized First National was opened for business early in 1934 when he became cashier and the active executive officer of the bank. He was united in marriage with Miss Pearl Olson of Alcester, the marriage taking place at Sioux Falls on May 25th of last year. They immediately established a home in Hawarden and now in less than a year this happy home has been plunged into deepest mourning. Mrs. Vander Stoep. herself a trained nurse, accompanied him to the hospital and with other nurses there was in almost constant attendance upon him. His father from Sioux Center and other relatives were also in Sioux City with him during the days preceding his death. Harb. Vander Stoep made hundreds of friends during the years of his residence in Hawarden who were shocked by his sudden death. While reserved and somewhat undemonstrative in his outward demeanor, he was sincere and yet firm, friendly yet still retaining certain dignity which commanded the respect of all with whom he came in contact. He possessed to a marked degree those elements which denote character. Through his close attention to the details of the banking business in which he was engaged he merited and enjoyed the utmost confidence of his business associates and patrons of the institution. Apparently he stood just at the threshold of a most promising business career when death intervened to claim him. In addition to his business connections, he took an active interest in civic and social affairs. He was a member of the Rotary Club and also a member of the Board of Directors of the Chamber of Commerce, ever willing to fulfill the responsibilities which devolved upon him. His death is a distinct loss to the community and there is widespread sympathy for the sadly bereaved wife, aged parents, brothers and sisters. Besides his wife he is survived by his parents, Mr. and Mrs. A . Vander Stoep of Sioux Center; four brothers and four sisters, Richard Vander Stoep of Lynden, Wash.; Mrs. Joanna Olson of Sioux City; James Vander Stoep of Terre Haute, Ind,; Miss Sade Vander Stoep of Seattle, Wash.; Miss Lillian of Sioux City; Miss Mary of Kamrar, Iowa; Claude of Sioux City, and Harry Vander Stoep, a medical student at the State University at Iowa City.
