McCORMICK Life began for Harley Franklin McCormick on November 10, 1907, when he was born to James A. and Ida Mae (Brewster) McCormick on what was known as the Bacon place about three miles west of Norden, Nebraska. Harley's death came peacefully at the Spring Creek Health Care Center, Fort Collins, Colorado, on May 18 1991, at the age of 83. Harley received his early eduacation in rural Keya Paha County schools before finishing elementary and secondary schooling in Valentine, Nebraska. He was a graduate of the Valentine High School Class of 1926. Also in that year, he was a member of the Valentine High School basketball team which participated in the 16th annual State Basketball Championships in Lincoln. He was also particularly active in music and drama in high school. In 1927, he entered into a ranching and farming partnership with his father and elder brother, Charles. That partnership formed the foundation for his life-long occupation. Harley and Willna A. Kuhre were married September 7, 1929, at Winner, South Dakota. After making their early home on the partnership farm and ranch, they built a home of their own about 3/4 mile southeast and on what remains as the McCormick ranch and still owned by his brothers east of Sparks. Harley cut longs from the Niobrara River canyon for the home, and assisted in sawing the lumber at his father-in-law's sawmill along the Fairfield Creek south of Norden. Harley and Willna began their family on April 8, 1935, when Anna Mae was born to them in Springview. A son, Duane, was born February 9, 1937, in Valentine. As early as the late 1930's and early 1940's, Harley became dedicated to the establishment of a rural electric system to serve rural farms and ranches. He helped to found what later became the KBR Rural Public Power District, serving for over 40 years in the creation and establishment of the district. Harley and Willna sold their original farm and ranch, and in the spring of 1948 moved to their new home northeast of Norden. After purchasing the ranch, they were to discover that his grandparents had spent their first night in Keya Paha County at this location when they arrived to homestead in 1887. Here, Harley and Willna finished raising their family and made their home until 1986 when they bought a home in Valentine. Although they spent the winter months in Valentine, they returned to the ranch during the summer and maintained their residence in Keya Paha County. Harley was active in the Keya Paha County Agricultural Fair Society most of his working life and into retirment. Her served on local school borards, was active in the early agencies supporting soil and water conservation, and along with Willna, was charter member of the Keya Paha County Historical Society. Both were especially active in the Historical Society in their retirement years. He was a long-time member of the Presbyterian Church in Valentine. He spent a lifetime contributing to the rural community that he cherished. Preceding him in death was their daughter, Anna Mae, in 1958. Surviving him are his wife, Willna, of nearly 62 years; a son, Durane, and grandsons, Matthew and Jordan, the latter three, Fort Collins, Colorado. Remarkably his family of five brothers and three sisters survive him. They include, in order of birth, Eva Thomas, Rapid City, South Dakota; Maybelle Garner, Valentine; Charles, Valentine; Walter, Sacramento, California; Mildred Williamson, Clovis, New Nexicao; twin brothers, Wendell, Clovis, New Mexico; and Leonard, Sparks; and Howard, also Sparks. Also surviving are 24 nephews and nieces and a number of great and great-great nephews and nieces. Especially close to him were his niece, Betty, and her husband, Con Keech, Valentine. Joining them in bereavement are a daughter-in-law, Sharon, his sisters-in-law, Melva (Mrs. Charles), Lucille (Mrs. Walter), Ruth (Mrs. Wendell, Mary (Mrs. Leonard), and Edith (Mrs. Howard), McCormick. Funeral services were held Tuesday, May 21, 1991, at the Valentine Presybterian Church. Burial was in the family plot in Mt. Hope Cemetery, also in Valentine. Memorial may be to the Harley F. McCormick memorial Foundation, 502 N. Cherry, Valentine, NE 69201.
