He was born Dec 5, 1911 near Sparks and Norden to James A. and Ida Mae Brewster McCormick. He spent his youth on family ranches near Sparks and Norden. He attended rural schools and then high school in Valentine. After high school he was a cattle buyer and meat inspector for Armour Packing Plant in Omaha. He married Lucille Weaver in 1930, with a daughter born to this union. He volunteered for service in World War II and served in the Pacific Theater in Calcutta, India, as cattle buyer and meat inspector for the U. A. Army in that area. After the war ended he became a cattle buyer for the Safeway Food Store Chain, as well as for ranchers and farmers. Upon his retirment, he pursued his hobbies of specialized gardening, the study of many sciences and music.
