Lead Daily Call newspaper, September 30, 1955 - "LONGTIME LEAD RESIDENT DIES. Mrs. Harriet Schoonover, 63, resident of Lead for the past 39 years, died early this morning at the Homestake Hospital in Lead. She had been ill for the past year and entered the hospital Thursday. Mrs. Schoonover was born July 28, 1892 to Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Schoonover of Oxford, Neb. She was married in Nebraska in 1919 to Hiram A. Schoonover and the couple made their home in Missouri for a time later coming to Lead where they since resided. She was preceded in death by her parents, and by her husband who died in Lead Dec. 26, 1951. Survivors include two daughters, Mrs. A. Scarborough, Rapid, and Mrs. R. Cleveland, Lead; a son, Captain Kenneth Schoonover now stationed in Germany; a grandson, Bill Cleveland, Lead; two granddaughters, Patty Kay and Leslie JoAnn Schoonover, Blacktail; a brother, Vaughan Schoonover, Limon, Colo. and three sisters, Mrs. Dalla Peterson, Kearney, Neb., Mrs. Fay Norman, North Platte, Neb., and Bernice, who resides on the West Coast. The body is at McColley's Funeral Home in Lead where funeral services are pending word from Captain Schoonover." Lead Daily Call, October 3, 1955 - "Rites to Be Wednesday. Funeral services for Mrs. Harriet Schoonover, 39-year resident of Lead who died Sept. 30, will be held Wednesday at 2 p.m. at the McColley Chapel in Lead. The Rev. J. Harley Thompson of the Lead Methodist Church will officiate. Burial will be in the South Lead Cemetery under direction of McColley's Funeral Home." Lead Daily Call, October 6, 1955 - "Mrs. Schoonover Rites Conducted. Funeral services for Mrs. Harriet Schoonover, well-known long-time Lead resident, were held this afternoon at the McColley Chapel in Lead. The Rev. J. Harley Thompson of the Lead Methodist Church officiated. Music was provided by Mrs. Winnifred Stephenson of Lead, who sang 'Crossing the Bar' and 'Face to Face.' Mrs. George Vukovich, Lead, was accompanist. Pallbearers were Bennie Brist, A.B. Mitchell, Walter Ruzick Jr., William Hager, Richard Morcom and Frank Hauk, all of Lead. Interment was in the South Lead cemetery under the direction of McColley's Funeral Home. Mrs. Schoonover was active in community groups as a member of the Methodist Church, the Methodist Women's Society of Christian Service, the Lead Woman's Club, the Rebekah Lodge, and was a member of the Girl Scout Council for a number of years. A member of the American Legion Auxiliary, she served as president of the Homestake Unit 31 two different terms, 1944 and 1950, and was unit secretary at the time of her death. She was president of the Past Presidents Club, ALA in 1949 and 1950 and was a member of the West River Salon of the 8 et 40, ALA." SOUTH DAKOTA STATE FILE #286811
