Lead Daily Call newspaper - Wednesday December 26, 1951 - "Harry Addison Schoonover, a 35 year veteran of Homestake Mining Co. died early this morning at his home at 219 South Mill. He would have been 64 years old Thursday. Schoonover was born December 27, 1887 at Seymour in Wayne County, Iowa. He grew to manhood in Missouri and moved to Lead 36 years ago. On September 8, 1916 he started work in the mine department of Homestake Mining Company and worked there until 5 years ago when he was made a watchman. He was scheduled to return to work today after two weeks vacation. He was a member of Methodist Chruch and was affiliated with the Independent Order of Foresters, Moose Lodge and Homestake Veterans Association. In 1914 he was married to Harriet Haywood, who survives. Also surviving are a son, Cpt. Kenneth Schoonover, Ft. Knox, Ky, two daughters, Mrs. Audrey French of Evanston, Ill. and Betty of Lead, two brothers in Missouri and a brother in Colorado and two grandchildren. The body is at McColley Funeral Home. Services have not been set pending the arrival of Cpt. Schoonover." The Lead Daily Call - Friday, December 28, 1951 -Funeral services for Hiram Admer Schoonover will be conducted Sunday afternoon at 2:30 at McColley Funeral home in Lead. The Rev. H. Howard Miller of the First Methodist Church in Deadwood will officiate. Active pallbearers will be William Hager, Albert B. Mitchell, William A. Mitchell, Jelbert Morcam, Richard Morcom and Walter Ruzick, Jr. All friends will be considered Honorary pallbearers. Burial will be in South Lead Municipal Cemetery. Schoonover died early Wednesday morning at his home at 219 S. Mill. His son, Cpt. Kenneth Schoonover arrived home by plane Thursday from Ft. Knox, Ky." Homestake Mining Company Veterans Association Records note that Harry Addison Schoonover joined the Association on February 21, 1945; born at Wayne County, Iowa on December 27, 1887; married to Harriet Haywood in 1914; children - 3: Kenneth, Audrey Baker, and Betty; began work for the Homestake Mining Company on September 8, 1916 in the Mine Department 900-1000 levels; died at his home on December 26, 1951.
