Washington, daughter of Winfield and Ella (Coulter) Holmes, was born in Ruskin, Nebraska, May 21, 1898, and passed away April 9, 1993, at the Good Samaritan Center in Superior, Nebraska, at the age of 94 years, 10 months and 19 days. Her father was a depot agent for the Rock Island Railroad, so they lived in the depot. At that time the agents were moved quite often. After living in several towns in Nebraska, the family was settled at Oak, Nebraska. There she spent most of her teenage years and she became acquainted with E. Carl Washington. She attended and graduated from Superior High School with the Class of 1915 and attended Peru College. Harriett taught school three years. When Carl came home from World War I, they were united in marriage at the home of her parents in Hastings, Nebraska, on July 7, 1920. All but two years of their married life she lived in Superior in the same house which they built in 1924. This union was blessed with two sons, Wendell and Denny. She has belonged to the Methodist Church for more than 75 years, the American Legion Auxiliary for 70 years and World War I Barracks Auxiliary. Preceding her in death were her parents, her husband Carl on September 24, 1987, and her two sons. Survivors include four grandchildren, Scott Washington and his family of Ainsworth, Nebraska, Mrs. Jan (Susie) Kilbuck of Paradise, California, David Washington Klein and family of Iowa City, Iowa, and Steve Klein of Denver, Colorado; two daughters-in-law, Margaret Washington Jones and her husband, Merle, of Chico, California, and Delores Washington Klein and her husband, Ray, of Loveland, Colorado; seven great grandchildren and one great great granddaughter, Britney, nieces, nephews, other relatives and a host of friends. Funeral services were held Tuesday, April 13, 1993, at 10:30 a.m. from Megrue-Price Funeral Home in Superior, Nebraska, with Rev. Jerry Heydenberk officiating. Music was provided by organist Carlita Price playing selections of "How Great Thou Art" and "In The Garden". Casketbearers were Scott Washington, Ray Klein, David Klein, Tim Grummert, Kent Washington and Raymond Grummert. Burial was in Evergreen Cemetery near Superior. Megrue-Price Funeral Home of Superior, Nebraska, was in charge of the arrangements.
