She married Horace Cowen on June 21, 1899. They were the parents of Milo, Resor, Hilles, Leslie, Virginia, and a son who died in infancy. July 6, 1939 - Sioux Rapids Press - Mrs. H.R. Cowan, prominent Sioux Rapids woman for many years, passed away last Friday morning about six o'clock at St Joseph's hospital in Sioux City, Ia. following a major operation some two weeks previous. Mrs. Cowan had not been in the best of health for about a year. Her condition became serious about a month ago and critical about a week prior to the operation. Funeral services for Mrs. Cowan were held at the Methodist church on Monday afternoon at two o'clock, and were in charge of Rev. B.M. Watson, pastor of the church. Rev. J.D. Wolcott of Havelock, a former pastor, preached the sermon. Music was furnished by Mrs. Edgar Merrill, Mrs. Ethel Mogster, Robert Higgins, and Laverne Mueller, who sang "Ivory Palaces," and "Beautiful Isle of Somewhere," accompanied by Walter Simonsen at the piano. The many beautiful floral offerings were a testimony of the affection and esteem in which Mrs. Cowan was held by relatives and friends. Burial was made in Lone Tree cemetery under the direction of the Green Mortuary. Harriett Catherine Hawley was born July 2, 1878, at Hewlett, New York, and passed away July 1, 1939, after several months of illness. She was the sixth child of George and Mary Hawley and when two years of age came with her parents and the rest of the family to Pocahontas county, IA settling on a farm four miles south of Laurens which is still the old home place. here she grew to womanhood. She was united in marriage with Horace R Cowan at Laurens, Iowa on June 21, 1900. together they made their residence in the town of Sioux Rapids. to this union seven children were born, six sons and one daughter. Two sons have preceded their mother in death. She is survived by her husband, Horace R Cowen; her sons: Resor of Spencer, Iowa, Rex and Hilles of Sioux Rapids, Lester of Twin Falls, Idaho; one daughter Virgina Holleson of Sioux Rapids; also 6 grandchildren; her brothers: Charles Hawley of Euphrata, WA; Fred and Seymour Hawley of Laurens; Albert Hawley of Blue Earth, MN; her sisters: Mrs Esther Tuttle of Pocahontas; Mrs Mae Roewe of Laurens; Mrs W J Wilson of Milford, Utah; Miss Sopheonia Hawley of Los Angeles, CA.
