Harry was born June 29th, 1920, in Sugar Grove, Ohio, to William and Clara (Sheets) Ricketts. He graduated from Berne Union High School in 1938 and married Della (Shull) Ricketts on May 31st, 1941, at Trinity Lutheran Church in Logan, Ohio. He was preceded in death by his parents, William and Clara, sister, Edith Ricketts-Blume, and brothers, Merrill "Rick" and Elmer Ricketts. Harry is survived by his wife, Della, of 76 years, children, Ginger (Ron) Abel and Mike (Lise) Ricketts. Harry was very proud of his grandchildren, Stephanie (David) Hohmann, Ryan (Jana) Phipps, Kristin (Bart) Smith, Lauren Ricketts and her fiancé Keith Blakley. Harry was exceptional at teasing his greatgrandchildren, JT and Shannon Jackson-Hohmann, Vince Hohmann, Shelby (Tyler Henderson), Lillie, and Jackson Phipps, Amelia and William Smith. In addition to his immediate family, Harry is also survived by his sister-in-law, Rose Doty, and numerous special nieces and nephews. On July 22nd of 1943, Harry enlisted in the United States Army. He was a veteran of World War II where he earned several medals, including the European-African-Middle Eastern Theater Medal with 1 Silver Star and 1 Bronze Star, a good conduct medal, and 3 Bronze Oak Leaf Clusters. He earned the Distinguished Flying Cross while serving in the Army Air Corps as an Aerial Tail Gunner in the famous B-24 bomber. While serving in Europe, Harry was stationed in England and Scotland flying daytime missions over Germany. Harry's crew flew a total of 32 missions over Germany, seven more than required at that time. Once in France, his plane was shot down, and all of the crew survived the crash. Harry was honorably discharged from service October 21st, 1945. Upon returning to civilian life, Harry and Burnsie Moore started a gas station business in Sugar Grove. This led to the purchase of a dump truck and the creation of Ricketts & Moore Excavating, which Harry purchased outright in 1972. That business became Ricketts Excavating, which continues to serve Lancaster today. Calling Hours will be Friday, August 25th, from 5-8 PM, at Halteman-Fett & Dyer Funeral Home, 436 North Broad Street, Lancaster, OH 43130. Service will be held on Saturday, with visitation at 10:30 AM and funeral following promptly at 11:00 AM at Redeemer Lutheran Church, 1400 Concordia Drive, Lancaster, OH 43130.
