The drowning of young Harry Bennett, the eleven-year-old son of Mr. and Mrs. Marlin Bennett, of Greenwood avenue in the reservoir Wednesday afternoon, as reported in the DEMOCRAT of that evening, was an unusually sad happening. HOW IT OCCURRED. Wednesday afternoon, Harry Bennett went to the castor shop intending to go to work, but was told at the shop that they were not ready for him. He started to return home, but some boy companions persuaded him to accompany them to the reservoir where they intended to go in bathing. He was reluctant as he was unable to swim, having, it is said, never been in deep water before. However, he finally consented to go and the party of boys started for the reservoir. They had decided to bathe at the first bridge, or near Campbell's place. FATAL STEP OFF. Arriving at the big pond, young Bennett with the other boys disrobed and entered the water, at the first bridge. His comrades were all able to swim and were soon out in the water. Bennett waded out slowly in the shallow water which at this point extends about 10 feet from the shore and then suddenly deepens, taking a sheer drop, until the depth is said to be twenty-five feet. Coming to this step-off, as the boys call it, he stepped over the sub-surface bank and sank beneath the water. As he went down, he tried to grasp a comrade, but failed and never came up to the surface of the water again, as it was afterwards discovered, catching in the roots of a stump. The other boys of the party were too badly frightened to make an attempt to rescue Bennett. SEARCH FOR BODY. The boys soon gave the alarm and a crowd of people gathered, the news spreading like wild fire. The drowning occurred about 2:30 o'clock and by 3 o'clock quite a large number of men and boys were searching for the body, but not until almost 9 o'clock Thursday morning was the search successful. From 3 o'clock Wednesday until Thursday morning the hunt for the body was kept up by many men and boys, as high as one hundred being engaged in the work at once. Officers Cameron and Laugers and Chief Gus Kuemmerling of the police force directed the search and did splendid work. One boy who was diving for the body had a grewsome experience. He dived down and came up almost immediately and as pale as a sheet. He declared that he had touched the corpse in the water but could not move it. Another said that he pulled the body to the surface with a grappling hook but that the clothes tore and allowed it to slip back. This is doubted however. WORKED ALL NIGHT. Joe Johnson, a machinist at Mosler Safe Works and Jacob Johnson, also a machinist, uncles of the dead boy, were the leaders in the search and although the shades of night fell on the party at work, these two men were indomitable and kept at work with a seine and grappling hooks. All night long, they persisted in their efforts to find the body of their little nephew, their sister's boy. Early in the evening, the moon arose and shed her soft rays of light on the scene, making the picturesque spot more beautiful and yet to one who knew what happened there, it made it a scene more weird and ghostly. BODY FOUND. Early Thursday morning, the seine in use caught on some object and came up with blood on part of the apparatus. The the searchers knew that some place at that point the body of the lad lay in the water. Hooks were brought into use and at just twenty minutes before 9 o'clock Thursday morning the Johnson brothers lifted the lifeless body of their little nephew from the water. The body had been lodged in the roots of a stump and held fast. The city ambulance was called, Coroner Sharkey notified and the body taken to Bonner's morgue. Published in the Hamilton Daily Democrat, July 5, 1901. **************************** FUNERAL Of Harry Bennett Was Held Friday Afternoon. The funeral of young Harry Bennett, who was drowned Wednesday in the reservoir, was held Friday afternoon at 4 o'clock from the residence of his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Martin Bennett of 822 Greenwood avenue. Rev. G. O. Black, pastor of the Church of Christ, conducted the funeral services and preached a short sermon. The burial was in Greenwood cemetery.
