A feeling of deep sorrow was cast over our entire community when the sad news reached here of the accidental shooting of Harry Preston Moore, which occurred Thursday afternoon at Windy Cover, near Millboro Springs, in Bath county. A party of boys left here some time ago for that place on a fishing and hunting expedition. Young Moore, accompanied by a friend, joined them Thursday afternoon, leaving Lexington early that morning. Samuel McP Glasgow, son of Mr. Frank T Glasgow, was in the first party. He was out gunning that afternoon and on returning to camp he found the new arrivals there. His gun was still cocked, and on attempting to let down the hammer, it slipped, discharging the gun, and the entire load entering the right side of young Moore, who was sitting in front of the tent, from the effects of which he died in something over an hour. The boys were horrified at the terrible accident and phoned at once to Lexington of the unfortunate occurrence. A physician was at once summoned but no relief could be afforded, some of the shot having entered the liver and stomach. The boy was brought to Lexington Friday via Clifton Forge. The funeral was conducted by Rev. Dr. J A Quarles, took place from his father's home Saturday morning at 10 o'clock, attended by a large number of relatives and friends. The deceased was a son of County Treasurer Samuel R Moore by his first wife, who was a Miss Laird, sister of Mrs. J P Moore, and who died about 15 years ago. He was in his 18th year, and a young man of fine promise. Of a quiet disposition and studious habits, he was of a religious turn and was a consistent member of the Lexington Presbyterian church. He had many friends among the young men of his own age and a number of them testified to that friendship by placing flowers on his grave.
