Harvey and Mary Jane arrived in Defiance Co. in 1849, first purchasing farm land in Delaware Twp. and later farm land in Washington Twp. in section 33. Harvey McFeters enlisted for 5 years of service in the Mexican War on 7 Nov 1841 at Fort Atkinson, Iowa City, Iowa (aka Iowa Territory). He served in the 1st Regiment Co B. of the U.S. Dragoons, being discharged with the rank of Corporal from Fort Leavenworth on 7 Nov 1846. An “Affidavit of Wittness” by William Donley of Ney, Washington Twp., Defiance Co., OH was included in the pension application. William stated “I know when he first came to this county 38 years ago he had his discharge from the Mexican Army and I know from personal observation that he had a land warrant for his service”. Harvey was granted a pension of $8.00 per month on 4 June 1887, to be paid retro-active from 29 Jan 1887 as per the Mexican War Act of 29 Jan 1887. Harvey's Mexican War Pension #103.17 Mary Jane's widows application # 7562 Iowa City, Johnson Co., Iowa was created by an act of Legislative Assembly of the Iowa Territory on January 21, 1839, fulfilling the desire of Governor Robert Lucas to move the capital out of Burlington and closer to the center of the territory. Iowa City is located on bluffs above the Iowa River, was platted in June of 1839 and officially become the capital of the Iowa Territory from 1841 to 1857, after which the state capital was moved to Des Moines.
