Alexander died in Gresham, Ore., Saturday, according to a message from Mrs. Alexander to her son, Roger, who lives in Kingman and arrived in Emporia today to arrange for the burial of his father. The body of Mr. Alexander, accompanied by Mrs. Alexander and other members of the family, will arrive in Emporia on Santa Fe Train No. 6, Thursday afternoon. The body will be taken from the train to Maplewood Cemetery where short services will be held, conducted by Rev. D. Y. Donaldson. The A.O.U.W. Lodge will be in charge. Mr. Alexander formerly lived in Emporia and moved recently to Oregon. For years he was city clerk, and a good one. He knew more about city affairs in the nineties and in the first decade of this century than any other man; for he kept his job through changing administrations. Mr. Alexander was an old soldier--a veteran of the Civil War, and in his prime, was a fine, upstanding figure of a man--a man of high honor, who had old-fashioned chivalric ideas of duty and civic responsibility. No other kind of man could have come out of a long term of responsibility as a public servant as he came unstained and with a blameless record. There was no one to check him but his own high sense of obligation. For mayors and councils came and went but he remained. Fine, faithful, capable, honorable gentleman he was, and when he enters the Kingdom, he will feel at home among the highest there. ************************************ The Emporia Gazette, 23 Jan 1920, Fri CONCERNING H. S. ALEXANDER Harvey S. Alexander, who died January 17 at the home of his daughter, Mrs. William J. Ott, in Gresham, Ore., was born in Eugene, Ind., October 24, 1844. He was enlisted on August 10, 1862 as a private in Capt. G. W. Holloway's Company D, 126th Regiment, Illinois Volunteer Infantry. Mr. Alexander's regiment was commanded by Col. Omar Harmon, and was composed of young men from Vermillion and Champlain Counties. From Danville, the regiment went to Cincinnati, then across the Ohio River to Covington, Ky. On September 24, 1862, the regiment embarked for transport to Louisville, Ky. A few days later it was assigned to 3d Brigade, 2d Division, 14th Army Corps, crossed to the Army of the Cumberland, with which it fought throughout the war. Mr. Alexander was in the following engagements: Perryville, Chattanooga, Lookout Mountain, Missionary Ridge, Buzzard's Roost, Resnca, Dallas, New Home Church, Kenesaw Mountain, where the 125th led the brigade in the assault--the battle in which the commander, General McCook, was killed. Mr. Alexander was in the Peach Tree Creek engagement, the Siege of Atlanta, Jonesborough, the March to the Sea, Savannah and several minor engagements. He marched in the General Review in Washington, May 24, 1865, and was mustered out of service June 8, 1865. Mr. Alexander came to Emporia in 1870 and was employed by James Griffith. For 22 years he was water superintendent of Emporia. In the past years Mr. Alexander's health began to fail, and last August, Mr. and Mrs. Alexander and daughter, Gertrude, went to Oregon for Mr. Alexander's health. He is survived by Mrs. Alexander and four children: Raymond, of Colorado Springs, Colo.; Mrs. William J. Ott, of Gresham, Ore.; Roger, of Kingman, Kan.; and Gertrude, of Gresham, Ore.; two sisters, Mrs. J. M. Griffith, of Kansas City, Mo.; and Mrs. Will Frazer, of Georgetown, Ill.; and a brother, W. H. Alexander, of Mound City, Kan. Private funeral services were held at the home of Mrs. Ott in Gresham. Interment was made in Maplewood Cemetery in Emporia, yesterday afternoon.
