The Nelson Gazette (Nelson, NE), Thursday, August 2, 1917; pg. 1 ===== HATTIE PEARL BAKER Hattie Pearl Baker was born at Silver Hill, West Virginia, September 18, 1882, and died suddenly at Los Angeles, California, July 30, 1917, aged 34 years, 10 months and 12 days. She came with her parents to Nelson in 1885. She graduated from the public schools here in 1898 and afterwards spent a few years teaching but later attended Business College in Omaha preparing herself for her chosen profession that of a stenographer. Most of the years since completing her course she has been in the employ of he International Harvester Company, working for this company in Omaha and Alliance, Nebraska, Portland, Oregon, Kansas City and Los Angeles. She went to the last named place last February, being sent by the company as they were starting a new office. She had handed in her resignation some weeks ago which was to take effect August first and she was then going to Portland, Oregon. Her death was a terrible shock to her relatives and friends as letters had been received from her on Friday before her death and she was then looking forward to her trip. She leaves to mourn her death, father, two sisters, Mrs. Maggie Norwood and Edna of this place, and two brothers, Hazlitt D. of Alliance, her twin and Clarence W. located on the U.S.S. Oklahoma. All were present at the funeral except the brother in the Navy. Her mother preceded her to rest last April. Hattie is one who will be greatly missed in the home and by her friends for she was of such a disposition that carried sunshine wherever she went, always thinking of those about her instead of self. Her friends are numbered by the people whom she knew. The remains arrived Saturday, accompanied by Miss Bolshaw who was employed in the same office with the deceased, and laid to rest beside the mother Saturday afternoon. The pall bearers were: T.T. Kauffman, M.A. Rule, M.W. Carter, J.B. Goodrich, John Koser and J.B. Wroughton. The music was furnished by Harold Wood, J.P. Baker, Mrs. Roy Faw, Mrs. Roy Utter, Mrs. E.E. Hedgcock, Helen Lamb. Pauline Lamb presided at the piano. The funeral service was conducted by Rev. W.W. Hull at the Methodist church (sic). The Nelson Gazette (Nelson, NE), Thursday, August 9, 1917; pg. 1
