Obituary of Hazel Amos, along time resident of Sargent, Nebraska passed away August 8, 1965 at the age of 84 years, 6 months, and 8 days. Hazel, the youngest child of Andrew and Vina (Sturm) Thompson was born on January 31, 1901 in Richardson County, Nebraska. In 1904 the family moved to a farm adjacent to the Coburg School south of Sargent. Hazel grew up to womanhood there attending Coburg County School and Sargent High School. On January 5, 1918 she was united in marriage to Burt Amos in Manhattan, Kansas while Burt was serving in the Army during World War I. After World War I she and Burt returned to the Coburg area and engaged in farming. During the ensuing 44 years Hazel and Burt were business partner in farming, in the family-run restaurant and hotel in Sargent and later as co-workers in the Sargent Post Office. Hazel also made time for social, welfare and religious activities. She had been a member of the Sargent Methodist Church for 50 years, serving on the board, in the chair, in the woman's society and singing for funerals. Hazel was a long-time worker and leader in the Rebekah. She rose to the Presiding of the Nebraska Assembly of the Rebekah in 1938. She also served many years on the State Board and on the governing board of the Rebekah home in York, Nebraska. Hazel was a long-standing member and leader of the American War Mothers rising to the position of State President. She was among the numerous volunteers who helped to run the canteen in North Platte, Nebraska during World War II for service men traveling through that area by train. She was also active in Nebraska American Legion Auxiliary and had been a permanent member since 1969. Hazel was active in the Nebraska Federation of Women's Clubs. She was Custer County Federation President from 1960 to 1962 and State Chairman of International Affairs form 1962 to 1964. On January 5, 1985 Hazel and Burt observed their last wedding anniversary, their 67th. Burt have predeceased her on June 22, 1965. Survivors include two sons, Robert Farrish of Paradise Valley, Arizona and Lynn Royce of Kearney, Nebraska. A daughter, Donita Hastings predeceased her in 1968. Also predeceased her were three brothers, Albert, Lester and Charles and one sister Eva Thompson. Also surviving are eight grandchildren, thirteen great grandchildren and one great, great grandchild. Funeral services were held August 14 at the Rhoad Chapel with Rev. Steven Flader officiating. Music was provided by soloist Deanna Goble and organist Linda Seifried. Pallbearers were Albert Brass, Wendell Brass, Danny Gibbens. Louis Hansen, LeRoy Matousek and Robert Perrin. Interment was at Sargent Mount Cemetery.
