Description	:	Hazel M. Ruchert Krouse peacefully passed away with her family at her side Sunday, April 20, 2008, at Memory Manor Nursing Home in Pomeroy. She had been a resident there for 41/2 years and died of infirmities of age. She was 96 years and 11 months old. Her parents, Otto and Rose Beringer Ruchert, farmed the Hiller place on Dutch Flat near Pomeroy. She was born there on May 20, 1911. Later they moved to the Kuhl Ridge area, where her father farmed the Schmidt place. Her sister, Jessie, was born there in 1916. Mother rode horseback several miles to school to attend the first and second grades at Kuhl Ridge school. One winter after a heavy snowfall she got her horse stuck in a snowdrift. Mr. Kausche, who lived close by, dug her out and sent her on her way to school. Several times when the weather was bad she would stay with families who lived near the school. In 1920 the family moved to Peola, where they farmed the Robinson place. They bought a house in Pomeroy so Hazel and Jessie could walk to school. They lived in town during the school year and on the farm during the summer. Mother would often ride her horse from Pomeroy to the Ed and Anna Ruchert farm, 10 miles from Pomeroy, to visit her cousins, Boyd and Wilma Ruchert. She also took the train from Pomeroy to Chard to visit her uncle Frank and Caroline Ruchert and their family. Mother recalled many wonderful memories of the Ruchert families getting together for camping trips to the mountains to gather mushrooms or to pick huckleberries. They would go to the Tucannon River to fish, sometimes taking the horses down Bear Creek Trail to Ruchert Camp. The trail was steep and she would hold onto the horse's tail to help her back up the trail. Mother graduated from Pomeroy High School. She worked as a telephone operator in Pomeroy, and on Dec. 12, 1934, she married Kenneth L. Krouse. They made their home in Pomeroy, and Kenneth worked at his family's blacksmith shop. He did blacksmithing and learned at an early age to be a mechanic. He was also a member of the Pomeroy Fire Department. They became parents of two children, Donna Rae in 1937 and Otto Henry in 1940, while living in Pomeroy. In 1941, Mother's father bought a ranch 21 miles from Pomeroy in Columbia County and they moved there in 1942. She was back on a farm again and dearly loved it. She raised chickens, sold eggs and cream, and always had a big garden. She was a wonderful cook and seamstress. They belonged to the Willow Creek Grange and Mother joined the Tucannon Friendship Club. While living at the ranch she enjoyed the friendship of the people who lived up and down the Tucannon. She always welcomed company and took great pride in winning blue ribbons for her angel food cakes at the county fair. Mother served the Columbia County Cowbells as president, secretary and treasurer, in 1958-1960, she served as state secretary and in 1964 was elected president of the Washington State Cowbells. In 1957 Kenneth and Hazel were the Columbia County Cattlemen of the Year. She first joined the Federation of Women's Club in 1941 when she joined the Pyla Nova Club at Pomeroy. After moving to Columbia County she joined the Benevolentia Club, where she served as treasurer and president. In 1967 she was elected as third vice president of Southeastern District and succeeded to be president of that district in 1970. She traveled with Kenneth to many fire commissioners meetings, and from 1962-66 was president of the Ladies Auxiliary of the Washington State Fire Commissioners Association. She was a member of the Daughters of the Nile and was a member of the First Christian Church in Pomeroy. Her husband, Kenneth, passed away Oct. 17, 1984. They had been married for 49 years. Mother was blessed with nine grandchildren and dearly loved them all. She has 22 great-grandchildren and one great-great-granddaughter. They were all very special to her. She is survived by her two children, daughter Donna McGee and son Otto and his wife Barbara Krouse, all of Pomeroy; her grandchildren, Mark McGee of Pomeroy, Scott McGee of Pomeroy, Melissa McGee Wilson and husband Derek of Lewiston, Tim Krouse and wife Cora of Roy, Wash., Sherry Krouse Reck and husband Jeff of Fitchburg, Mass., Steve Krouse and wife Laurel of Pomeroy, Mike Krouse of Richland, Connie Krouse Beckman and husband Stacy of Walla Walla, Kevin Krouse of Walla Walla; and two first cousins, Max Ruchert of Pomeroy and Lois Ruchert Wallace of Alpharetta, Ga. She was preceded in death by her mother and father; her husband, Kenneth Krouse; and her sister, Jessie Ruchert Crumpacker. The family suggests memorials may be sent to the Don McGee Scholarship Fund, The Garfield County Antique Fire Truck Fund, both in care of Sterling Savings Bank, P.O. Box 8, Pomeroy, WA 99347; or the charity of your choice. Cremation has taken place and a private family graveside service will be conducted on Friday. The Rev. Frank Musgrave of the Pomeroy First Christian Church will officiate at the service. Lewiston Tribune Apr 24, 2008
