Hazel died January 27, 1903, in Brock, Nemaha County, Nebraska. Her mother wrote the following in her diary after Hazel's death: Yes! Hazel died January 27, 1903, in Brock, Nemaha County, Nebraska. Her mother wrote the following in her diary after Hazel's death: Yes! Little did we think two weeks ago that her sweet smiling face would be cold in death. Nemaha County Herald (Auburn, Nebraska) 06 Feb 1903, page 6: Hazel Huston, the four-year-old daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Ed Huston, died on Tuesday afternoon of this week. The little one had been ill for some time, suffering from an attack of pneumonia following a seige (sic) of whooping cough. All that loving care, steadfast devotion and medical skill could accomplish was exerted in behalf of the little girl, but in vain. Thus was gathered home a beautiful flower that had just begun to peep upon the threshold of life and had entwined itself in the affections of all who gazed up on the sweet, smiling countenance of the innocent one.
