(Hoge) Engelbrecht on Tuesday May 8, 1906 on a farm west of Scribner, Dodge County Nebraska. Hattie was the third of five siblings. (Hoge) Engelbrecht on Tuesday May 8, 1906 on a farm west of Scribner, Dodge County Nebraska. Hattie was the third of five siblings. Hattie attended country school district twenty five, and later the Trinity Lutheran parochial school. Hattie was united in marriage to Carl Schwanke on Tuesday September 28, 1937 at the Scribner farm place of her parents with Pastor V. Kern officiating. Hattie and Carl had no children due to Carl having a severe case of the mumps as a child. The couple first farmed ten miles south of Scribner until 1940, this farm had an estimated GPS of 41.540971, -96.664389, the farm building has since been removed. Carl's brother Henry had farmed this land earlier. Hattie and Carl went on to own several farms, they would move from one farm to the other cleaning up the land, remodeling the house and farm buildings. I believe one of those farms was in the Dodge, Dodge County area. I recall Hattie and my mother purchasing a couple of gunny sacks full of cabbage and they would store the cabbage down in Hattie's cool farm cave. As a young boy the cave seemed very deep, many steps to the bottom. They would prepare a big batch of sauerkraut for our two families. This sauerkraut was the best kraut I have ever tasted. I once walked their Snyder farm soybeans field cutting weeds. This Snyder, Dodge County farm was located two miles south, a mile and quarter east of Snyder which I believe the GPS is 41.669608, -96.767730. I believe the house was on this point on the farm yard and a new house has since been built. At the time of her husband Carl's death the couple was busy remodeling the farmhouse kitchen. After Carl's death Hattie moved to the City of Scribner, she continued attending church service at the Trinity Lutheran Country Church. Hattie was a member of this church until it was dissolved in September 1986. Hattie then transferred her membership to St. Peter's Lutheran of Scribner. I visited Hattie in her Scribner home when I was home on leave from the Air Force, she fixed me a small lunch before I left. On the snowy day of Sunday March 29, 1987 at 1p Hattie was transported by Rescue Squad to the Fremont Dodge County Hospital where she passed that day. Hattie was 80 years, 10 months, 21 days of age which does not include her last day, she lived a total of 29,545 days. Hattie lived her entire lifetime in the Scribner area. Hattie's funeral service was held Wednesday April 1, 1987 at 1p at St. Peter's Lutheran Church at Scribner with Pastor Donald Brunner officiating. The hymns that were sung "I am but a stranger here", "What a friend we have in Jesus", and "I know that my redeemer lives". A luncheon was served by the ladies of the church. Hattie was interred in the rural Trinity Lutheran Church cemetery west of Scribner and if my memory is correct her grave is in the middle of the west row. Spear-Johnson Funeral Home was in charge of her funeral arrangements. Memorials were given to Trinity Lutheran Cemetery Fund. Hattie's information was provided from researching many resources and my memory. This biography was created as an honor to Hattie by her nephew Loren R.
