Description	:	Carl William Schwanke was born to his loving parents Christian Friedrich "Christ" and Marie Albertina "Albertina" (Metschke) Schwanke on Wednesday December 31, 1902. The 1910 census shows Carl's family living in Colfax County Stanton Township Nebraska when he was born. There were actually eleven children in his family, since it is believed his mother's first children were a set of twin girls. The 1910 census shows Carl's family living in Colfax County Stanton Township Nebraska when he was born. There were actually eleven children in his family, since it is believed his mother's first children were a set of twin girls. The twin girls died at birth, sadly there are no records of the twin's names nor where they were buried. Carl had five brothers and five sisters counting the twin sisters that passed. Carl also had a set of living twin sisters too. Carl was baptized Sunday January 4, 1903 by Pastor Helnrich F. W. Predohl. Carl was raised on a Platte County rural farm south southwest of Leigh, Colfax County with a GPS of 41.654460, -97.272033. Carl attended school in Leigh. Carl was confirmed in the Zion Lutheran Church of Leigh on Sunday March 24, 1918 by Pastor Erek. Carl was united in marriage to Hattie Engelbrecht on Tuesday September 28, 1937 at the Scribner, Dodge County farm home of her parents with Pastor V. Kern officiating. Carl and Hattie had no children due to Carl having a severe case of the mumps as a child. The couple first farmed ten miles south of Scribner with the GPS of 41.540971, -96.664389 until 1940, Carl's brother Henry had farmed this land earlier. Carl and Hattie had several farms that they would move from one to the other, cleaning up the land, remodeling the house and farm buildings. I believe one of those farms was in the Dodge area. Hattie and my mother would purchase a couple of gunny sacks full of cabbage and store the sacks down in Hattie's cool farm cave. As a young boy I recall going down those steps, it seemed very deep. They would prepare a big batch of sauerkraut for our two families. This sauerkraut was the best kraut I have ever tasted. I recall once walking Carl's soybeans to cut weeds from the field. This Snyder, Dodge County farm was located two miles south, a mile and quarter east of Snyder which I believe the GPS is 41.669608, -96.767730. I believe the house was on this point on the farm yard, I believe a new house has since been built. At the time of Carl's death the couple was busy remodeling the farmhouse kitchen, he was employed at the Scribner alfalfa mill, plus was busy with his farm work. Carl had felt weak and uneasy for several days. Carl decided to have a physical examination performed just the day before he passed, he passed this physical. The morning of his death he drove his John Deere tractor into Snyder and paid his bills. Later that afternoon Carl was on his front porch when he had a coronary occlusion and collapsed. That afternoon I recall my mother telling me my Uncle Carl had passed, she had tears streaming down her cheeks. We visited that evening with Hattie and I recall seeing Carl's work boots setting on the front porch. I thought at that moment that would be the way to go. Carl was one of my favorite uncles. Sadly Carl was pronounced dead that afternoon of Friday July 17, 1959 around 3:45p. Carl was 56 years, 6 months, 17 days which does not include his last day, he lived a total of 20,652 days. Carl's funeral service was held at the country Trinity Lutheran Church on Monday afternoon July 20, 1959 with Pastor Otto Wittig officiating, he was a member of this church. Shortly before this date Uncle Carl and I looked up at the moon from my folk's farm yard. Carl believed they would never land a man on the surface. Ironically Carl's funeral day was exactly ten years to the day before the moon landing. Carl was interred in the church cemetery and if my memory is correct his grave is in the middle of the west row. I recall his farm sale selling all his items and equipment. That day I was hopeful my father would purchase Carl's 1951 green Chevy for my brother, but it sold for too high of a price. Carl's information was provided from researching many resources and my memory. This biography was created as an honor to Carl by his nephew Loren R. I believe all lives matter, even the lives of those who have passed.
