Description	:	Heinrich George, or Henry, Bartels was born the last of five children to Henry Bartels and Marie nee Krömer, both of whom immigrated from Germany in 1870 and settled in the German community in Will County, Illinois near Crete. His father farmed there for about 11 years and then moved to Saline County, Nebraska where his brother Fred lived. His father farmed there for about 11 years and then moved to Saline County, Nebraska where his brother Fred lived. Henry attended grade school there at the Zion Lutheran parochial school south of Tobias. According to the 1940 census, he went through only the 4th grade. He was confirmed at Zion Lutheran Church in 1892; that same year his mother died in a house fire. Later, he joined his brother William when William moved his family to South Dakota. Henry's oldest brother remained in Nebraska, moving to Thayer county. His older sister Lena married and she and her husband and children moved to Jerault County, South Dakota after the last child was born in Nebraska. He had a sister, Wilhelmina, who was born in Illinois but died before reaching her 8th birthday in Saline County, Nebraska and is buried in the Old Zion cemetery there. His older brother William also stayed in South Dakota, around Pierre, and is buried also in Riverside Cemetery. On 29 Dec 1915 Henry married Ora V. Spencer at Fort Pierre in Stanley County. He farmed for over 20 years in Lyman county and moved to Sully County, but at some point moved back to Pierre. He and Ora had three children: Mary Lucille (named for Ora's mother, Lucy Pugh Spencer), Ray, and Dale.
