Death was caused by heart trouble and he was found in the basement of his home by Mrs. Sothman unconscious. A doctor was called but he passed away before his arrival. He was 80 years, one month, and seven days of age at the time of his death. He was born at Holstein, Germany, the son of Mr. and Mrs. Hans Sothman and came to America in 1881, locating at Rock Island, Illinois, which place he made his home until 1882, when he moved to Griswold, Iowa. He was married to Anna Martens in Noble township on February 29, 1884. To this union 11 children were born, 4 of which proceeded him in death, 3 girls and one boy. The girls were Mrs. Ellen Wohlenhaus, Nellie and Katherine who died in infancy. The boy was William Sothman. The living children are: E. F. Sothman, Werner Sothman and Henry M. Sothman, of Cumberland, Hans D. Sothman, of Griswold, The girls are: Mrs. Martha Knoke of Griswold, Mrs. Amanda Euken, of Cumberland and Mrs. Dollie Pelzer, of Griswold, 37 grandchildren and 4 great grandchildren. Mr. and Mrs. Sothman lived on the farm now occupied by Alvin Pelzer for a period of 39 years before retirement in 1923 at which time they moved to Cumberland and have been residents of this town ever since. Mr. Sothman was prominent in the affairs of his community and served as a township trustee and school director for a period of years. He was affiliated with the Lutheran Church of which he had been a member for a number of years. Funeral services will be conducted from the home at 2:00 p.m. Saturday, February 25 and interment will be made in the cemetery one mile south and one mile east of the Lyman store." The following was written for Henry and Anna's 50th Anniversary: A BRIEF OUTLINE OF OUR PARENTS "On this day the 28th of February [1934] our parents celebrated their Fiftieth Wedding Anniversary and on this occasion we have made just a brief outline of their history. Father was born in Germany in the town of Holstein on January 15, 1859. Mother who was Anna F. Martens was born in Holstein, Germany the 23rd day of December 1860. They were real sweethearts in Germany. Father a young man in those days had a desire to come to America. He went to Hamburg, Germany where he boarded an ocean liner going to England and then around and up through the Clyde River to Glasgow, Scotland. From there he sailed to New York City and landed there June 15, 1880. He had a big thrill of seeing America and the city of New York. He did not stay in the city for he boarded a train and came to Rock Island, Illinois and on June 17th he surprised the people that he knew there. As he was walking down the street and not knowing anybody nor being able to speak English so that he might ask for information, he was noticed by a German driving a large beer wagon. This German knew father had just come from Germany and hailed him by saying, "Veegates [Wie geht's {How goes it}] Launchman." Right away the conversation started. The beer wagon driver knew exactly the place where father wished to go and was delivering some beer next door. Father accompanied the man and arrived just in time for breakfast. He visited there for awhile and then got work, staying in Rock Island until March 1, 1882. From there he went west to Des Moines and worked in Warren County, Iowa until November, 1882. Mother followed Father to America in 1882, coming to Warren County July 25th after a visit with her Uncle Fred Martens in Noble Township, Cass County. She worked in Griswold and then in Atlantic until February 29, 1884. In 1882 father came farther west to Cass County and worked on a farm near Griswold. They saw a great deal of each other again. He worked by the month until February, 1884, when on the last day of the month, February 29, 1884, the great day came. We see that this year was leap year but we have no record of which one did the asking. Just the same, armed with a marriage license the wedding ceremony was performed by Rev. Buschman of the St. John's Lutheran Church of Noble Township which bound them to each other as husband and wife. With great ambition for the future they started life together, sharing equally the hardships, sickness and sorrows, troubles, and grief that all must come in contact with in this world. After the marriage Father rented a farm in Pottawattamie County two miles west of Griswold and after staying there for a year, in 1885 he moved to Cass County, Noble Township, one mile east and one-fourth mile south where he rented another farm. Here they resided until 1923, when they moved to Cumberland, leaving the old homestead to Mr. and Mrs. Irvin Pelzer to farm. There are seven of us brothers and sisters who take great pride on this day in honoring our father and mother on their Fiftieth Wedding Anniversary. We hope that they will be with us for many years to come, and that no troubles may enter their lives and we pray God's blessing upon them."
