She wrote of Nellie’s illness and death and this is just a short summary. One suppertime, we were all around when baby Nellie became very ill. Dollie wrote that Nellie had eaten the green part of a watermelon and became very ill. Brother Earnest was told to ride the pony to Joe Listen’s because he had the first telephone in the neighborhood. Joe lived a mile and a half east and half a mile north. Joe called Doctor Weaver in Cumberland to come out. The doctor did not arrive until the next morning as he had to drive a horse and buggy to the Sothman farm. When Dolly got up that morning, Nellie was gone. Papa made a wooden box for her last place to sleep. That afternoon, neighbors came as well as the minister. They sang a song and then traveled in buggies to the Weirich cemetery (about a mile south). Nellie is buried just inside the gate in a plot provided by Henry Weirich. Dollie recalled it was late summer and the grass and weeds were tall.
