He was born on June 18, 1888 in rural Lyman, Noble Township, Cass County, Iowa. He was the forth child of Henry and Anna Martens Sothman. He grew to manhood in this farming community. He married Emma Margaret Duden on March 15, 1912. CUSTOM THRESHING In 1904 three brothers, Bill, Ernest, and Werner, while farming south of Cumberland near Lyman, began custom threshing, with a steam powered threshing machine. Werner, who was 16, hauled water for the engine, which was operated by Frank Liston. Bill and Ernest ran the threshing machine. This year they threshed 72 days and snow fell before they finished, so they had to knock snow off the grain stacks. By 1906 they owned three steam-powered machines with Bill, Ernest, and Werner each operating one. Two years later, in 1908, they had nine machines in all, with each brother managing three machines. Bill had his equipment in the Grant, Griswold, and Lyman areas. Ernest remained in the home area around Lyman, and Werner operated in the Cumberland, Massena, and Wiota areas. They shelled corn throughout the year. Before and after the threshing seasons, they baled clover, shredded fodder, filled silos, and sawed wood. These operations continued in the same neighborhoods for 14 years until 1918 when Bill died. After 1918, Ernest and Werner established an automotive and farm equipment business in Cumberland under the name of Sothman Brothers, which was later changed to Sothman Motor Company. In 1920 Werner and his family moved to Cumberland. Some of the above is from the Sothman Family History, 1996 Notes: From the 1983 Cumberland, Iowa, history. “Sothman Motor Company was a business enterprise that served Cass County and vicinity for more that 50 years. First know as Sothman Brothers, it started in Cumberland in 1920 when Ernest and Werner Sothman purchased the Pros Pettinger garage. It was located west of the present post office and now is occupied by the Farmers Co-operative. They also occupied the Cumberland Implement building on Main Street. The business began as a dealership of automotive products, farm equipment and supplies, sales, and service. Contracts with many companies were taken up or dropped over the years. The first major contracts handled included Ford, Chevrolet, Buick, Pontiac, and Oakland automobiles as well as John Deere, International, and Minneapolis-Moline farm equipment, and International trucks. Later they sold Chrysler and Plymouth automobiles and concentrated on Allis-Chalmers, Massey-Harris, Oliver, and Minneapolis-Moline farm equipment and GMC trucks. In 1936 they opened a branch store in Atlantic, and in 1943 the Cumberland business was moved there.” Additional notes: The Atlantic Sothman Motor Company was located on Walnut Street. Ernest died in 1958 and Werner continued the business until 1972 when it was closed. Werner and Emma would move to Sun City, Arizona in 1972 and enjoy themselves in retirement.
