Read More	HANS HENRY WILLIAM SOTHMAN William Sothman was born on December 11, 1884 on a farm northwest of Griswold in Cass County, Iowa. He died on December 21, 1918 in Cass County, Iowa. The following was taken from the Sothman Family History which gives credit to the Griswold American newspaper dated January 2, 1919 (p. 1, col 1): A death that came to a well known resident of Noble township on December 21st was that of Will H. Sothman. He has been engaged in the threshing business for many years and had hosts of friends in all parts of the country. Several weeks ago he contracted a severe cold which failed to yield to any treatment that he took and it developed into pneumonia, which was the immediate cause of his untimely death. A trained nurse was in attendance but he gradually grew worse from day to day until 11 o’clock on the 21st when his spirit departed. He was born on a farm northwest of Griswold on the 11th day of December, 1884, and in the year 1885, his parents moved to Noble township which has been his home ever since. He never married but made his home with his parents. The funeral services were held on the lawn of the home Monday of this week, being conducted by the Rev. F. L. Bodenbeck, after which the remains were laid away in the Weirich cemetery. He is survived by his father, mother, four brothers and four sisters. The family have the sympathy to all in their hour of sorrow. Additional notes from the same Sothman Family History which are credited to the Cumberland, Iowa history and are shown for Ernest F. Sothman but would also apply to his brothers as follows: From the 1983 Cumberland, Iowa history: CUSTOM THRESHING In 1904 three brothers, Bill, Ernest, and Werner, while farming south of Cumberland near Lyman, began custom threshing, with a steam powered threshing machine. Werner, who was 16, hauled water for the engine, which was operated by Frank Liston. Bill and Ernest ran the threshing machine. This year they threshed 72 days and snow fell before they finished, so they had to knock snow off the grain stacks. By 1906 they owned three steam-powered machines with Bill, Ernest, and Werner each operating one. Two years later, in 1908, they had nine machines in all, with each brother managing three machines. Bill had his equipment in the Grant, Griswold, and Lyman areas. Ernest remained in the home area around Lyman, and Werner operated in the Cumberland, Massena, and Wiota areas. They shelled corn throughout the year. Before and after the threshing seasons, they baled clover, shredded fodder, filled silos, and sawed wood. These operations continued in the same neighborhoods for 14 years until 1918 when Bill died. Added note: William Henry Sothman had registered for the U. S.
