Helen was the daughter of Elisa Toliver and Anna Marie (Frisk) Bellamy. Their 5th child and 4th daughter. I am making her Bio from the book that she and her siblings added stories of their memories of childhood and lives, put together by her niece C. Helen was the daughter of Elisa Toliver and Anna Marie (Frisk) Bellamy. Their 5th child and 4th daughter. I am making her Bio from the book that she and her siblings added stories of their memories of childhood and lives, put together by her niece C. Eileen Hanarhan Dawson, daughter of her sister Stella May Bellamy Hanarhan, put in to a book called "The E.T. Bellamy Family" in 1982. She wrote a ton of wonderful things, but would take pages to add, so will cut many things out, only what shows person she is/was. When young, as all kids do they made dumb things, got scratches, bumps and bruises, and into trouble with one or both parents. One time she began sneaking into the cellar and getting meat for a sandwich. She went down to the barn only her dad was there. He asked where is mine. Right away she went and made one for him. This kept up for a few nights, until her mother said, someone has been stealing out meat, I only took a little out sometime ago, and the jar is almost empty. She said that she ran from the house, as she heard her dad burst out in loud laughter. When the family moved from the farm in 1924 to live in Versailles (her dad still worked the farm some 20 miles away), because her mother was ill, she was going into the 8th grade. After her mother died in November of that same year, she quit school and got a job as a waitress, cook and dishwasher, at a local café called the Tea Cup Inn. Later quitting there and began working at MacMoore's Café, working for 5:30 A.M., until 10 or 10:30 P.M, 7 days a week for $5.00 a week. One of her sisters would come in before 7 P.M., staying until she got off, so that she didn't have to walk home alone in the dark. At some point (she didn't remember just when) she met Gordon Hopkins. Her sister who use to walk her home had got a job so couldn't anymore and one night when she got off work Gordon was waiting to walk her home. He did this every night and they soon began to date. They dated a couple of years, when on June 30, 1928 in Baptist Parsonage in Versailles they married (her dad had been killed the year before when a board he was sawing kicked back and killed him instantly). They moved right away to Fulton, to work at the shoe factory. When the shoe factory moved down south they returned to Versailles and on their 2nd anniversary their first born child Billie Sue (Billie) was born. Gordon had gotten temporary jobs with the telephone company and construction work, with them trying to make ends meet. When the depression came, he had lost his jobs. They were with no money and were down to only one egg, when she and Gordon got on their knees and began praying for help. Before they were finished with the prayer a man began yelling for Gordon, saying he'd bought a cow and wanted to pay him $1.00 to drive it home for him. With that they were able to by 2 large bags of food. Then later that same day a man came by who had two cows, but couldn't afford to feed them both, would they be willing to feed and care for the cow for him, until things were better for exchange for her milk. The answer to their prayers didn't end there, because soon Gordon was offered a job in an apple orchard for $1.00 a day, six days a week. 1932 Gordon was now working at Nichols Feed Store and their 2nd child Joette Danelle (Jo) was born in Dec. Five and a half year later in 1938 their 3rd child was born, being Roy Earl (Sonny/Hank). When Roy was about 3 years old, they were about to buy a forty acre farm south of Versailles for $500.00. It had a house, well and barn as well, so they were able to have a large garden as he farmed. In Nov of 1941 their 4th child Roxie Anna (Sugar) was born to them. Then Gordon was drafted into the Navy. They had to sell the farm and cows, getting a good price. The day he packed his bags and went to town to catch the train to leave, he was told the Armistice had been signed. Two months later, they tried to buy back their farm but the people wanted way to much, so they rented a farm. In Feb 1944 their 5th child Saundra Helen (Tootie) was born, with Janett Carolyn (Pug), their 6th child being born in Dec of 1945. They then moved to Eldon and Gordon went to work at he Wesley & Jordan Shoe Factory, working there until 1953, when Gordon got a job at M.F.A. (Missouri Farmers Association) as a seed cleaner, they moved to Tipton. She then went back to work and worked at the pants factory for twenty years. During those years they had bought a home. After retirement they did some traveling after getting a new truck with a camper, and Gordon even fished, though he didn't like it, because she enjoyed it. In 1978 they celebrated their 50th Anniversary, with their children and their families with all of her sisters being able to be with them, her brother had died 4 years before. 1980 she was widowed when Gordon had a heart attack at home. He had made her promise that if anything would happen to him, she would sell their house, so she kept her promise selling it, and renting a small house in the country near their son Roy and had a big garden, her dogs and a cat.
