Read More	Helen Louisa Orr, 101 Bremerton, Washington January 16, 1915 to May 28, 2016 Longtime resident and businesswoman Helen Louisa Orr died May 28, 2016, at Stafford Healthcare at Belmont in Bremerton, of congestive heart failure at the age of 101. Helen was born January 16, 1915, in rural Lynch, Nebraska, to Edgar William and Blanche Louisa (Parliman) Whetham. The family consisted of four girls and nine boys. She graduated from Lynch High School in 1932 and taught school for one year. She married Dayle Elmer Orr on April 20, 1934, and left Lynch for Seattle in 1935 with their infant daughter Clara Lou. They lived in Seattle and had three more children, two boys, and a girl. Clara Lou died of pneumonia in 1938. They moved to the Burley area in 1941 and to Bremerton in 1945. Dayle worked in the Puget Sound Naval Shipyard and Helen worked as a seamstress in a shirt factory located upstairs next to the Admiral Theater. Deciding that was not what she wanted to do for a living, she traveled to Seattle and worked as an apprentice for Baker Furs, and quickly landed a job with "Furs by Hughes" at Sixth and Montgomery in Bremerton. She learned the fur trade: repairing, cleaning, and making hats, coats, jackets, stoles, and vests. During the 1940s/1950s furs were a big business. When Ernie Hughes retired in 1950, Helen bought the business. Bridal wear was added to the inventory and the business was renamed "D'Orr Fur and Bridal Shoppe". The business quickly grew and in 1962 relocated to downtown Bremerton on Fourth Street, across from the Roxy Theater. By then a full line of bridal wear, formals and ladies' apparel had been added, along with the fur business. Her desire was to have a shop on Pacific Avenue, as this was the most prestigious retail location in Bremerton at that time. In 1983, the business moved to Fifth and Pacific. Her son Bob was working with her then, and when he died in 1991, she closed the business and retired. Until her retirement, she was active in the Business and Professional Women's Club, Soroptimist and Bremerton Chamber of Commerce. After retiring, she spent many hours volunteering in the Harrison Hospital gift shop, until she developed a heart problem at the age of 93. She was a 50 year member and Past Worthy Matron of Olympic Chapter #216 Order of Eastern Star; 50 year member and Past Royal Matron Bremerton Court #8, Order of Amaranth; Past Worthy High Priestess of White Shrine of Jerusalem; member of Ladies Oriental Shrine of North America AHLAB Court #67, Tacoma; member of Damascus Shrine #3, White Shrine of Jerusalem; Past Guardian of Bethel #20, Order of Job's Daughters, and member of the Bremerton First United Methodist Church. Helen was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Dayle in 1981, daughter Clara Lou, and sons Robert Bruce and Douglas Edgar Orr. She is survived by her daughter, step-son, brother and their spouses; eight grandchildren, nine great-grandchildren, five great-great grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews. Helen was an amazing woman, well known and loved by many. We want to thank her wonderful roommate and the staff at Stafford Healthcare at Belmont for their special friendship and loving care. At her request there will be no service. She considered her 100th birthday party with family and friends, and receiving the Key To The City from Mayor Patty Lent, her "Celebration of Life". She will be interred in Wing I Crypt #65 Hillcrest Mausoleum at Forest Lawn Cemetery in Bremerton.
