Helen passed away on June 28, 2013, from Alzheimer's disease, at the Good Samaritan Society in Corsica, SD. Helen Mae Robson was born on July, 22, 1920, at Fort Pierre, SD, to William Robson and Nellie Alice (Thomsen) Robson. She lived her childhood there with her parents and 3 brothers. Her father was a plumber and her mother was a homemaker. She met Joseph Wayne (Jiggs) Thompson in high school and fell in love with the handsome talented boy from the Fort George District of the Lower Brule Reservation. They were married on January 18, 1938, and were the first married couple to graduate from Fort Pierre High School, Class of 1938. There she learned the skills of typing, shorthand, and bookkeeping, which would serve her well in her life and career. When WWII called her husband to enlist in the US Marine Corp in 1942, she traveled to San Diego CA where he was stationed. She worked as a secretary at the US Naval Base and at Consolidated Aircraft. She and Jiggs would not see each other for 3 years while he was overseas in the Pacific Theatre, letters and telegraphs were their only contact. Jiggs returned to the US in 1945, and the couple moved to Sioux Falls where he attended college and she worked as a secretary. Their first daughter Linda was born in 1949 and they moved back to Fort George, living in a log cabin with no electricity. In 1950 they moved to Lower Brule, where she worked for the Lower Brule Cattle Enterprise and Jiggs started a cattle herd. Their second daughter Martha was born in 1954. Helen and the children moved to Pierre in 1956 where she worked for the BIA Pierre Agency Realty Office while Jiggs stayed in Lower Brule to care for the cattle. In 1958 she and the children moved back to Lower Brule where she worked as the Executive Secretary for the Lower Brule Sioux Tribe. She recorded all the council meetings by short hand, transcribing and typing the minutes and resolutions, and managed all other business operations. Their third daughter Julie was born in 1959. Helen continued to work for the Tribe until she retired in 1971. Helen worked with her husband on all aspects of their ranch operation and other business ventures and rodeo activities, performing all the accounting and business management. She was noted for her efficiency and professionalism throughout her work career and their family businesses. Helen was active in the Legion Auxiliary, Sioux Valley Extension Club, served on the Lower Brule School Board, enjoyed flower gardening, sewing, crocheting, reading and was an excellent cook. She had a devoted dog companion, Shorty, the last 10 years of her life, who she raised from a stray puppy, and her special cat Pickles. Helen lived most of her life on the Lower Brule Reservation. She loved the Indian people and had a special admiration for Jiggs' grandparents Joe and Mary Little Elk Thompson, for their culture, grace, wisdom and dignity. She worked at her husband's side while he served 22 years on the Tribal Council, for progress and advancement of the Lower Brule Reservation. Helen is remembered with the greatest love and appreciation by her family. She was a devoted wife and she always put her children first, was kind and helpful to all her children and grandchildren all her life. Her grandchildren remember her always being there to nurture and teach them, reading to them, doing crafts and cooking with them, being their confidant and protector. All holidays were celebrated by gathering at Grandma's, she was the cornerstone that kept the family together.She is survived by her daughters Linda Sewell (William) of Tombstone AZ, Martha Coleman (Richard) and Julie Brinckmeyer, and son Fritz LaRoche (Cheryll) all of Lower Brule SD; grandchildren Donna Ducheneaux, Roberta Ducheneaux Sinclair (Kraig), Joe Ducheneaux, Damien and Canbie Thompson, Bill Long Turkey (Theresa), John Long Turkey, Jeremiah and Frederick LaRoche, Richie, Josh, and Jon Coleman, Mitch Hansen and Faith Begay; great-grandchildren Danielle Ducheneaux, Corbin Surat, and Jaxon Ducheneaux; Chad and Jacob Ducheneaux; Emily, Grace, Alison and Park Sinclair; Hunter Thompson; Deja Thompson; and Tallie Long Turkey. She was preceded in death by her parents, her brothers William, Reuben, and Don, her husband JW Thompson, infant sons Joseph Jr and Benjamin William.
