McCants died at the family home northwest of town on rural route 2, Monday morning. She had been ill but a few days, and most of us did not know she was seriously sick. Pneumonia worked fast and while everything possible was done, she left us. Miss Helen was born September 24, 1918, at the place she had lived all her life. She was a junior last year in the Crawford Community high school, and was one of the popular young ladies out there. She took part in everything that was going on, and was always jolly and was well liked by everyone. Just one of those good girls that you couldn't help but like. One who always had a pleasant word for all, old or young. She was a member of the 4-H club and the Girl Reserves. Besides her parents, she is survived by a brother, Porter McCants, 18, and a sister, Aletha Faye McCants, 8; and her grandmother, Mrs. Laura Porter. Funeral services were held at the Methodist church Wednesday afternoon and the church could not nearly accommodate the gathering of friends who had come to pay her respect and to show their love for her. Rev. Fred Clark was in charge. The pallbearers were school mates of Helen's and were: active -- Melvin Miller, Homer Miller, Charles Clugston, Clyde Loveland, Jr., Bill Longston, and Bill Wilson; honorary -- Frances O'Malley, Lorene Polston, Mary K. Spielman, Lucille Needham, Margaret Mitchell and Nadine Rhodd. Interment was in the Cherokee cemetery.
