"Bill" McCants, 86, of Cherokee, died at 4:50 a.m. Friday, Nov. 3, 1978, at his home following a heart attack. He had been ill for a year. Mr. McCants was born on Nov. 3, 1892, near Cherokee, the son of Joshua McCants and Lucinda Wiles McCants. He graduated from the Crawford County High School in Cherokee in 1912. He was a farmer all his life and still was raising cattle. He was a member of the Cherokee Methodist Church and a member of and past master of AF&AM No. 119 in Cherokee. He also was a charter member of the Cherokee Ruritan Club. Mr. McCants married Aletha Luella Porter on March 10, 1915. She survives. The couple celebrated its 63rd anniversary March 10. Mr. and Mrs. McCants lived all of their married lives in Mrs. McCants' family home, in which she was born and had lived all her life. Besides his wife, survivors include a son, Porter McCants, Chillocothe, Ill.; a daughter, Mrs. Carl (Aletha) Faye Otto, Bronson; two grandsons, William Otto, McCune, and Kenneth Otto, Mound City, and two great-granddaughters. Two daughters, Helen and Opal, died before him. Services will be at 3 p.m. Sunday in the Cherokee Methodist Church with Olin Hamblin officiating. Burial will be in the Cherokee Cemetery with Masonic graveside services. The family will receive friends from 7 to 8 p.m. today in the Brenner Chapel.
