Description	:	Helen Sherwood was born in her grandparent's homestead house located north of Draper, South Dakota, on November 21, 1920 to Wilber and Dora Midge (Roush) Sherwood. She started school at the Prairie Home School, attended classes at Draper School and Lincoln School and moved with her parents in 1933 to the DeGray area where she graduated from the eighth grade. Read More	Helen Sherwood was born in her grandparent's homestead house located north of Draper, South Dakota, on November 21, 1920 to Wilber and Dora Midge (Roush) Sherwood. She started school at the Prairie Home School, attended classes at Draper School and Lincoln School and moved with her parents in 1933 to the DeGray area where she graduated from the eighth grade. She had two years of high school in the Canning Consolidated School District, the third year at Sandpoint, Idaho High School and was graduated from the Pierre High School in 1938. Shortly after graduating, she married Arthur Metzinger. To this union 10 children were born. They began their life together in the Canning area until 1946 when they moved to Peoria Bottom along the Missouri River where they lived until 1958 when the Oahe Dam flooded their farm land. They moved into Ft. Pierre keeping their cattle on rented grassland. After three years, they rented a place back in the country and moved there. Six years later, finding a place for sale five miles south of Blunt, they would locate there until their retirement. Twenty years after graduating from high school, Helen got her first job as a secretary for an insurance claims office. Later she was offered a part time position as bookkeeper for a door and window company. At the same time was part time Hughes County's first Food Stamp Cashier. That window was in the Office of Equalization and she helped with forms for personal and property assessment; later working on the 1980 Census as overseer for Hughes and Sully Counties. Because of the drought in 1976, all the cattle had to be sold. And in 1979, the ranch was sold. They retired to a small acreage just outside of Pierre. In the 80's they moved back to the farm south of Blunt where Helen started an Antique Shop in the barn haymow. Due to the poor health of her husband, the ranch was sold and an apartment building and house was purchased in Pierre where Helen became the manager. The move was made back to the city and Arthur died in 2001. At age 80, Helen chose to move to a restored historic house (making the move herself) and two years later sold the apartment building to her son. Helen was a member of Ss. Peter and Paul Catholic Church and of the St. Agnes Band. Surviving her are her ten children and their spouses: Loretta (Willie) Cowan of Pierre, SD, Janet (Dale) Keller of Gold Hills, OR, Judith "Judy" (Dennis) Pullman, Onida, SD, Geraldine "Deenie" (Dean) Frederick, Agar, SD, Leroy (Sharon Harkless) Metzinger, Blunt, SD, Patricia "Patty" (Gary) Wietgrefe, Sioux Falls, SD, Sharon Metzinger, Roseburg, OR, Michael (Barbara Vanden Brock) Metzinger, Artesian, SD, Lyle "Joe" Metzinger, Pierre, SD, and Mary (Lyle) Stewart, Pierre, SD; 31 grandchildren and their spouses; 54 great-grandchildren and spouses; and four great-great-grand children; two sister: Beverly (Duane) Rupkalvis of Holdredge, NE and Barbara Thimsen, Pierre, SD.
