Mrs. Haight died at the Golden Living Center on Saturday, April 17, 2010. ——— Helen was born the second child to Albert Franklin Gardels and Helena Elizabeth Marie (Bierman) Gardels on Dec. 23, 1910, in Battle Creek. She was baptized on Jan. 15, 1911. Helen attended St. John's Parochial School in Battle Creek and was confirmed on April 13, 1924. She graduated from Battle Creek High School in 1928. Helen met Arden Haight at a Walther League party in Pierce, and they were married on Aug. 28, 1933, at St. John's Lutheran Church in Battle Creek. Arden was employed by the Standard Oil Company for many years and was transferred to Norfolk around 1937. They were both members of Christ Lutheran Church. Helen was an active member of the Lutheran Women's League, Sewing Circle, a former president of the Ladies Aid Circle, Braille workers and Meals on Wheels. She did volunteer work for the Red Cross during World War II, took care of her younger sister Anne, who had heart trouble, and started working at the Lutheran Hospital in 1955 as a nurse's aide. In 1984, Helen was employee of the month and year. It was said of Helen, she is of the "old school;" she gives "good old-fashioned bedside nursing care." She finally retired at the age of 80 in 1990. Helen belonged to several card clubs, which she loved, playing cards whether it was with lady friends, family or neighbors. She loved getting together with friends and family — always wanting to make sure that she fed you something to eat or just a cup of coffee. Everyone was welcome into her home just about anytime, day or night. Helen also spent many hours taking care of her grandchildren and loved doing so. Mother's main goal was to live a pleasing, God-fearing life, taking care of everyone that she could help. She prayed every day that we would all be baptized, confirmed and come to faith in Christ Jesus and wake up refreshed to start a new day. She truly lived her life as an example of what she truly believed: having complete faith and trust in God to take care of her. With the help of her two granddaughters, Kim and DelRae, and her caregiver, Donna Volquardsen, Helen was able to remain in her own home until April of 2008, when she moved into the Golden Living Center after a short stay in the hospital for severe back and stomach pain. The family wishes to thank the staff at the Golden Living Center and the Asera Care Hospice of Norfolk for their great care and concern. Helen is survived by her only child, Ruth Ann Hoover and husband Larry of Omaha; her grandchildren, Kim Halsey of Norfolk, DelRae Stueckrath and husband Kelly of Norfolk, Jason Hoover and wife Vicki of Omaha; six great-grandchildren and six great-great-grand children; two sisters-in-law, Ruth Gardels of Norfolk, Mildred Gardels of Omaha; and many cousins, nieces and nephews. Helen was preceded in death by her parents, her husband of 53 years, Arden Haight, seven brothers and three sisters.
