Helga T. Berg
Mrs. Gilbert Berg, 74, passed away at Mercy Hospital, Tuesday, January 5, 1954 at 1:05 p.m. Her health had failed gradually since last summer when she broke her hip in a fall in her home at LaMoure.
Helga Telisa Brox was born at Baldwin, St. Croix County, Wisconsin on July 28, 1879.
She came to Barnes County with her parents, Ingvart and Beret Brox in 1882. They were the first homesteaders to locate in Greenland Township. The homestead was six miles west of Litchville, the farm now owned by the Albert H. Bergs.

Helga Telisa Brox was born at Baldwin, St. Croix County, Wisconsin on July 28, 1879.
She came to Barnes County with her parents, Ingvart and Beret Brox in 1882. They were the first homesteaders to locate in Greenland Township. The homestead was six miles west of Litchville, the farm now owned by the Albert H. Bergs.
On February 11, 1899, Helga Brox and Gilbert Berg were united in marriage at a farm home about a mile from St. Thomas Lutheran Church (south). They homesteaded in Rosebud Township, Barnes County, North Dakota (southeast of the Brox homestead) about 1899. Their claim was jumped by someone else when they were in Wisconsin during the winter logging. They lived on the Nordahl farm 8 years (1/2 mile north and ½ mile west of Bethlehem Cemetery); McKinney farm one year; Sperger farm 1914-1916; then in the Montpelier area until 1922 and the Brox farm until 1937. Gilbert was foreman on the Hastings Dam – WPA project in the 1930's. From 1937-1942 they lived at Morton, WA where Gilbert ran a Donkey Steam Engine in a sawmill. They retired to LaMoure, ND until Helga died. Gilbert then lived in Marion ND from 1953-1958? and a Fargo nursing home 1958-1960.
Nine children were born to this union: Bertha (Mrs. Leonard Boyer), Buxton, ND; Alice (Mrs. Theo. Wheeler), Buxton, ND; Leonard, Litchville, ND; Clifford, Perley, MN; Albert H., Litchville, ND; Elmer M., Staples, MN; Ann (Mrs. Ralph Hunt), Yakima, WA; Helen (Mrs. Bert Manns), Ypsilanti, ND; and Fred, Fort Meade, SD.
They also helped to raise Bert Berg's children: Art, Mildred and Milo after his first wife died.
Helga leaves three sisters: Mrs. W. A. (Willie) Olsen (Inga), Hermiston, OR (now residents in Miles City, MT); Mrs. M. (Emma) Bakken, Chetek, WI; Mrs. Martin (Mabel) Martinson, Litchville. Preceding her in death were her parents, Mr. and Mrs. I. J. Brox; a sister, Mrs. Magnus Bakken and a brother, Fred Brox.
Mrs, Berg was a pioneer of the area. She lived in a sod house, and joined in the continuous struggle to save the tree claim from the prairie fires. Each prairie fire that came would take part of the trees until today perhaps only half an acre of trees remain. As a tribute to our mother, we would say that she lived a good Christian life; she taught the children about God as best she could. She watched over us with loving care when we were sick – she was a wonderful mother.
Funeral services will be held on Saturday at 1:30 p.m. from the Marion Lutheran Church. Rev. Arnold Lund and Rev. Harold Schafer (both of LaMoure) will be in charge.
Interment will be in the Bethlehem Cemetery, a mile from the old homestead farm.
Funeral arrangements are being made by the Groth-Dobmeier Funeral Home of LaMoure.
