Description	:	Leonard Berg, 82, of Litchville died Friday night, December 4, 1987, in Mercy Hospital, Valley City. Funeral services will be held Thursday, December 10 at 10:30a.m. in the First Reformed Church in Litchville with Rev. Norman Wiukelman officiating. Read More	Leonard Berg, 82, of Litchville died Friday night, December 4, 1987, in Mercy Hospital, Valley City. Funeral services will be held Thursday, December 10 at 10:30a.m. in the First Reformed Church in Litchville with Rev. Norman Wiukelman officiating. Leonard Nelman Berg was born February 26, 1905 in Black Brook Township, Wisconsin, the son of Helga (Brox) and Gilbert Berg. As an infant, he came to North Dakota with the family. They lived on farms in the Litchville-Marion-Montpelier area during his youth. He was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran faith. Leonard graduated from Montpelier High School and worked at the Montpelier Magnet during those years where he learned the printing and publishing trade. After high school he attended Valley City State Teachers College and taught rural schools in the Litchville and Streeter communities before returning to newspaper work. He married Julia Hust at Billings, MT August 12, 1930. Following their marriage, the couple resided in Bottineau, ND until 1945. During this time Leonard worked his way up from a linotype operator to managing editor of the Bottineau Courant. He purchased TheLitchville Bulletin and became known as the "Bulletin Man" during the years he was editor and publisher October 1945 to October 1965. He went into semi-retirement, but continued to work in newspapers, briefly for the Steele County Press at Finley and again at the Bulletin. It was during this time he turned to gardening, which had been one of his hobbies. He was also an active photographer during his newspaper years. A stroke in January of 1984 forced retirement on him. In the years since, he has spent his time between nursing homes and his home in Litchville. He entered the Sheyenne Care Center in October 1986 where he lived until being hospitalized in October of 1987. He was a member of the First Baptist Church of Bottineau. He had served as Precinct committeeman while living in Bottineau. He had served as a member of the Litchville School Board for three terms, being president for one term. He had been a member of the North Dakota Newspaper Association during all of his active years in the newspaper field, as well as having a membership in the Society of Professional Journalists…Sigma delta Chi. In 1970 he received a 50-year award from the North Dakota Newspaper Association for the years he had been in newspaper work. He was a member of the Litchville Commercial Club serving in various offices. All of his sons and two daughters followed in their father's footprints and were printers at one time or another in their lives. He is survived by his wife, Julia, of Jamestown, ND; four daughters and four sons: Norma (Mrs. Robert) Miedema, Litchville; Glenn, Rochester, MN; Carol Opdahl, Tucson, AZ; Vernon, Bismarck; Kenneth, Lodi, CA; Ronald, Bridgeview, IL; Joan (Mrs. Ronald) Trapp, Marion, ND; and Laura Berg, Brooklyn Park, MN; two sisters: Mrs. Anne Hunt, Yakima, WA and Mrs. Albert (Helen) Manns, Ypsilanti, ND; one brother Fred, Nemo, SD; 20 grandchildren and 11 great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, two sisters: Bertha Boyer and Alice Wheeler; three brothers: Clifford, Albert and Elmer; and two grandsons: Kerry Berg and Bryce Miedema. Mrs. Evelyn Kluvers will provide the organ music. Special vocal music will be by Melvin Wieck as soloist who will sing "Just a Closer Walk With Thee" and "In the Garden." Pallbearers are grandsons and grandsons-in-law: Bradley Berg, Daniel Berg, Scott Berg, Bruce Berg, Wade Trapp, Cody Leonard Trapp, Kevin Smith, Hal Peterson and John Hulse. Burial will be in the Bethlehem Cemetery, rural Litchville. Olivers Chapel of Valley City is in charge of funeral arrangements.
