Description	:	Daughter of Thomas and Sarah (Jennings) Patterson. After the death of Hellen's father and five of their children by 1832 in Monongalia County VA (now WV) near Morgantown, his widow Sarah remarried in 1869 to physician John Brookover and moved from the Uniontown PA/Blacksville, WV border area to Clarington, Monroe County, Ohio, on the Ohio River. Hellen was married at Clarington, Monroe County, Ohio, to Daniel Paynter, whose English family had immigrated to a nearby Ohio river settlement in Grandview Township, Washington County, Ohio. Hellen's siblings also lived there, having moved from Monroe County, Ohio, to that adjacent county just south. Hellen's siblings who lived to adulthood with her were Henry Jennings Patterson, who stayed in southeast Ohio; James L.W. Patterson, who moved to Breckinridge County, Kentucky; and Elizabeth Patterson Baldwin, whose son, Thomas S. Baldwin, moved to Alton in 1877, just ahead of when the Paynters arrived in 1879. In Kansas, Aunt Hellen Paynters' family lived with nephew Thomas Baldwin's family while the Paynters' sod house was being made. Daniel and Hellen Patterson Paynter had earlier buried one daughter back in Ohio. Their children in Kansas were John T., James F., William H., Charles E., Albert J. and Martha V. (Miller). All but Albert are in Sumner Cemetery. Nephew Thomas soon buried his wife and one or two children and moved to Idaho but the Paynters remained. Hellen's children visited back and forth with her Ohio relatives.
