Read More	PUTLITZ, HELLMUTH FRANCIS FRANK--Helmuth Francis Putlitz, son of Franz and Augusta Mast Putlitz, was born at Warmbrunn, Silesia, March 8, 1852. He received his early education from private tutors and in the military academy at Goerlitz, Silesia. He was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran faith. While still a youth, Mr. Putlitz, in common with many young men of the Fatherland, heard the call of the sea, and he sailed from the port of Bremen on the “A. G. Pope” in 1868 for a voyage to the Pacific Ocean and return to Bremen. This was a wonderful experience for a youth, for it included visits to the Hawaiian Islands and other ports of call, and caused the ship twice to weather the tempestuous latitudes of stormy Cape Horn with the attendant dangers and discomforts of that passage out and home again. That interesting voyage on a sailing ship lasted 364 days. Another voyage was made on board the sailing ship “Athena.” Thus two year of the young man’s life were devoted to following the career of a sailor. Mr. Putlitz arrived in New York to become permanently a resident of the United States in the fall of 1870. Two years later he came west, following the famous advice just then given to young people by Horace Greeley, and after a period of about one year spent in Illinois, he came in the latter part of February, 1874, to Fillmore County, Nebraska, where he bought farm land situated on Turkey Creek, south of Fairmont. June 3, 1891, Mr. Putlitz was duly made a citizen of the United States, and the following November he was elected Clerk of the District Court and continued to holed that office for eight years. Thanksgiving day, 1875, Mr. Putlitz was united in marriage to Miss Martha Heiderstadt. There were born to them five children, all living, Francis F. Putlitz of Fairmont, Mrs. Martha A. Van Slyke of Hyattville, Wyo., Dr. Helmuth W. Putlitz of Santa Monica, Cal., Harry A. Putlitz and Mrs. Venda E. Tous of Fairmont, five grandchildren also survive, Misses Martha and Catherine Van Slyke of Wyoming, Fritz Putlitz of California, Mrs. Lois Levin of Pennsylvania and Mary Frances Tous of Fairmont. The mother of this family circle preceded her husband into the Great Beyond, January 12, 1927. Some years ago Mr. and Mrs. Putlitz and Mr. and Mrs. Charles Meyer, the latter being Mrs. Putlitz’s sister, held a joint celebration for the fiftieth anniversary of their wedding day, and on that occasion, with their children gathered around them, a little speech was made by Mr. Putlitz to the company of relatives and neighbors, referring back to the more primitive conditions of earlier days in Fillmore County. He had borrowed some funds from the very same Farmer’s State Bank of Fairmont in which in later years his children were to have a controlling share; and using the word s of the mortgage “Time is the essence of this contract” he concluded his remarks by saying: “We hope to be with you for a long while yet, for there is much to live for, dear to both of our families. But whenever the time comes that finis is written of the last page of our book, we will close our eyes with the sweet knowledge that the same tender hands that prepared this happy day for us will lay us to sleep, not so far from the farm house over the hill where our wedded lives started, in the soil of Fillmore County which we loved so well.” For “Time is the essence of the contract”. After suffering greatly in a brief illness of about one week’s duration, death came to him at Fairmont Thursday evening, August 24, 1933, in the eighty-second year of his earthly pilgrimage. Besides the numerous relatives present, a very large number of old friends and neighbors gathered at the residence of Mr. and Mrs. Tous in Fairmont Sunday afternoon for the funeral services, which were conducted by Rev. J. Henry Stitt. A large cortege accompanied the body to its resting place in the Geneva Cemetery. Pallbearers were Dr. M. M. Akin, E. A. Hall, W. E. Nedrow, G. W. Porter, C. W. Robinson and J. A.
