Koch was born on October 24, 1899, into a pioneer family of Custer County, Colorado. His parents, Mr. and Mrs. Peter Koch, the latter nee Miss Lena Knuth, were both members of pioneer families who were early settlers of Custer County and belonged to the original German Colony that came to Custer County from Chicago, Illinois, in the eighteen seventies, making the trip by covered wagon. They became homesteaders and ranchers of this area. Helmet G. Koch attended the public schools of Custer County. He has been associated with the ranching industry since early boyhood and has learned the business thoroughly from close and active participation. Mr. Koch married Miss Esther Cody, daughter of Charles and Mont Cody, on June 25, 1920, in Custer County, Colorado. Mr. and Mrs. Koch are the parents of eight children, John, Willa, Ralph, Edward, Margaret, Lorraine, Chester, and Russell. Mr. Koch is a member of the Wet Mountain Valley Stock Growers Association. He is noted for his substantial character, his ranching ability, and his devoted citizenship. WET MOUNTAIN TRIBUNE [WESTCLIFFE, CUSTER CO., CO], Aug 19, 1982 HELMUTH G. KOCH DIES AT AGE 82 Funeral services were held Friday, Aug. 13 for Helmuth George Koch who died Aug. 10, 1982 at St. Thomas More Hospital in Canon City following a lengthy illness. He was 82. Mr. Koch was born in Hillside on Oct. 24, 1899 to the late Peter F. Koch and Lena Knuth Koch. He ranched in the Hillside and Westcliffe area for many years and had been a resident of Canon City the past 22 years. He was a member of the Episcopal Church. He married Esther Cody in Salida on June 24, 1920. She survives, as do five sons and three daughters: Ralph Koch and Willa Buzzi of Westcliffe, John Koch and Chester Koch of Canon City, Edward Koch and Margaret Heller of Olathe, and Russell Koch and Lorraine Smith of Pueblo. Also surviving are 23 grandchildren, 32 great-grandchildren and one great-great grandchild. A sister, Ann Caughman of Florence, also survives. Funeral services were held at the Andrews Funeral home chapel with Rev. Robert Bryan of Christ Episcopal Church in Canon City officiating. Burial was at Lakeside Cemetery in Canon City. Pallbearers included four grandsons-in-law, John Parker, Don Crawley [Crowley], Dean Polk and Dale Earps [Erps], also James Cody and John Berry, and honorary pallbearers Gayle Patterson, James Berry, Joe Tomsick, George Koch, Matt Curtis Sr., and Tony Strainer.
