Daughter of Joseph Maddy and Rhoda Simmons OBITUARY THE CHARITON HERALD-PATRIOT Chariton, Iowa Thursday, May 29, 1947 MRS. FRED SHIMP Henrietta Jane Maddy, daughter of Joseph and Rhoda Maddy, was born April 17, 1879, in Marion county, Iowa. Her parents, with their family, moved to Lucas county when she a small girl. They lived in the vicinity of Zion church northeast of Williamson, Iowa, where she grew to womanhood, attending the Sunday school and church services of Zion church. Early in life she professed the Christian faith and united with the church June 14, 1903. On October 4, 1903, she was united in marriage with Fred E. Shimp. They established their home on a farm in Pleasant township, where they lived until they moved to Chariton, Iowa, in December of 1944, taking up their new residence on West Braden. Eight children came to bless and brighten their home. Two of them died in infancy. She gave to her home all the love and motherly care that was her particular gift. Several months before her death she was taken ill. All that loving care of her family and medical skill of the physician could do was done to aid her recovery. When she came to the end of her earthly life all of her family were at her bedside. The end came on the morning of May 19, 1947. She had attained the age of 68 years, one month and two days. She was, at her death, a member of the First Methodist church in Chariton, having transferred her membership to that church upon moving to Chariton several years ago. She is survived by her husband, Fred Shimp of Chariton; a son, Theodore E., of Des Moines; five daughters, Mrs. Marie Seward of Davenport, Iowa; Mernia Johnson and Hazel Clark of Knoxville, Iowa; Leona Simmerman and Clio Oswalt of Chicago, Ill.; fourteen grandchildren, two brothers, John Maddy of Russell, Iowa and James Maddy of Fonda, Iowa, and a number of nieces and nephews. Her passing will be mourned by a host of other relatives, neighbors and friends. Services were held Wednesday, May 21, at the Downs funeral home at 1:30 p.m. and at the Zion church at 2:30 p.m. The Rev. W. A. Samp of the Chariton Methodist church officiated at both services.
